Other colors are less in demand

“We sell about 300 tons of these vegetables per month. Since sales are constantly increasing every year, we can assume that our customers tend to consume more and more of this vegetable, ”says Mindaugas Tamošiūnas, Head of Category Management at Iki.

According to M. Tamošiūnas, buyers remain loyal to traditional Lithuanian tomato species and usually choose ordinary plum or red tomatoes.

According to the retail chain, red plum tomatoes are probably the most sought after due to their universal purpose. They contain little liquid, so they are best suited for many favorite salads, as well as various sauces or simply as a garnish. It is also noted that packaged tomatoes, as well as tomatoes with twigs, are becoming more popular every year. The reason for this is not only the taste, but also the convenient packaging that protects the vegetable itself.

M. Tamošiūnas also points out that the different colors of red tomatoes are not very popular yet.

“In this sense, Lithuanians are quite conservative, so for example yellow or dark red tomatoes are less in demand. They are also gradually bought and mastered, but buyers still prefer to try several new varieties of Lithuanian red tomato, ”he says.
