“If the accused admits the criminal offenses against him, gives evidence in this regard, the court offers the possibility of conducting an abbreviated examination of the evidence, which is done, the final sentence is reduced by one third,” said prosecutor Šarūnas Astrauskas to journalists.

On Monday, the Vilnius Regional Court opened a case about an attempt to carry out a terrorist act.

An abbreviated examination of the evidence was applied at the hearing.

According to the prosecutor, the young man has not been convicted in the past, the mitigating circumstance is that G. Beržinskas fully admits his guilt and sincerely regrets it.

Š. Astrauskas also added that the defendant is accused and can be held responsible for his actions.

“The defendant is very young, and after talking to him for a long time and during the pre-trial investigation, you can see that at some point in his life, the person has turned in the wrong direction, I think the person can do peace, “said the prosecutor.

G. Beržinskas’ lawyer, Aidas Mažeika, stated that he did not ask for a reduction in the proposed punishment, but stated that his defendant met the criteria according to which he could be sentenced to an even lighter punishment, not to prison.

“The lawyer stated his position, I expressed my position. I believe that the requested punishment is appropriate, because there were no serious consequences, however, an explosive was placed and if it had exploded, we can only think today about what would have happened, ”said Prosecutor Š. Astrauskas.

During the closing speeches, the defendant G. Beržinskas asked the court to take extenuating circumstances into account when sentencing him.

“I would like the honorable judge to note that a few hours later I immediately admitted that I had stated early enough that I felt sorry for the crime. I am critical of my own action (…) In all circumstances, I would like the court to take this into account when sentencing me, ”said the young man.

The court will announce the decision on September 18.

Born in 1999, G. Beržinskas is accused of leaving a homemade explosive on the wall of the building on J. Balčikonio Street, where the international company Western Union is located, on October 6 last year.

The young man also sprayed the inscriptions “FK DIVISION”, “SIEGE” and the swastika sign on the wall of the building with black paint.

Mr. Beržinskas was arrested on October 15 during a special operation involving Aro officials.

Explosives and chemicals ready to be detonated and removed from illicit circulation have been found in his house, from which a self-propelled high-explosive mechanism can be manufactured.

The search also found a self-made firearm and part of a category C weapon suitable for shooting, extremist and National Socialist literature, and symbolism of far-right views.

According to the police, the guy classifies himself as a group of far-right extremists in the Feuerkrieg Division.
