Merkel criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement on the deployment of a security force in Belarus. “I hope that unit is not used,” he said.
The chancellor expressed the hope that “the sovereignty of Belarus will be respected and that the people there can go their own way.” At the same time, he claimed that he did not intend to change the course of Russian politics. “Russia is a geostrategic actor to talk to,” Merkel said. The goal of her government remains to have “good relations” with Russia.
However, Russia’s relations with Germany and Europe are not good, Merkel admitted. He mentioned, among other things, the alleged poisoning of Russian opponent Alexei Navaln, who is currently being treated in Berlin. “We will try to do research with our options, which are really limited,” Merkel said. As soon as there is more clarity, a “European response” to Russia will be necessary.
