“We cannot call Lukashenko legitimate because there were no free democratic elections in Belarus,” the president told Sky News.

According to G. Nausėda, if the mediation efforts proposed by him are unsuccessful, other alternatives will be sought, including sanctions.

“Russia is interested in having a satellite state, if we are passive, Belarus will probably be fully integrated into Russia. Our interest, not only in Lithuania, but also in the European Union, is a stable, democratic and sovereign Belarus,” said G. Nausėda on British television Sky News.

On Wednesday, the president unveiled a three-step plan that could help resolve the political crisis in Belarus. It is true that so far G. Nausėda has not discussed the plan with the representatives of the Belarusian authorities.

According to representatives of the presidency, G. Nausėda granted this interview on Thursday, reports BNS.

According to the plan, the Belarusian authorities should first end the use of force against its citizens and exacerbate the situation.

Second, the Belarusian authorities would release several thousand detainees, all protesters who have been repressed.

“The third point is that the Belarusian authorities are resuming dialogue with their civil society. The formation of a certain national council of representatives of the government and civil society could be an appropriate solution in this direction,” said G. Nausėda.

On Wednesday, G. Nausėda admitted that there had been no communication with the representatives of the Belarusian authorities, so it cannot be ruled out that the Lukashenko regime will not enter into negotiations.
