Since 2020 May 8 After the entry into force of the amendments to the Employment Law, the status of unemployed is granted to people who are unemployed and study full time. Previously, such status was granted only to part-time students.

This amendment to the law opened the possibility for students to request benefits under the general procedure common to all residents of the country.

Since June 12 of this year. Students can apply to the Employment Service and apply for the Job Search Benefit. They are € 200, which can be paid for up to 6 months, but no more than 2020. December 31 The job search allowance is paid from the day a person applies for the job.

To receive this benefit, the student must register with the Employment Service and obtain unemployment status. When an unemployed person is already registered with the Employment Service, they only need to fill out an application on the prescribed form.

In addition to this benefit, students who have worked for at least 12 months in the last 30 months can apply for an additional Social Security Unemployment benefit, which would already be provided by Sodra.

The President of the Lithuanian Students’ Union, Eigirdas Sarkanas, is satisfied with the new decision and states that he has fought for this amendment for a decade: “We certainly appreciate this decision (aut. Pat.). In fact, this issue has been addressed in the context of the Lithuanian Student Union for almost ten years. Finally, in 2018, with the help of the members of the Seimas, an appeal was made to the Constitutional Court, which in the fall of 2019 expressed very clearly that the then provision that student status, in principle, prevents a student from receiving benefits due to unemployment, although it is not justified ”.

Student status always met all the requirements to be employed and the previous decision was in conflict with the Constitution.

“Finally, after the decision of the Constitutional Court, the decision was made in the Seimas to repeal this provision this spring, and now a student, if he is a working student, a student who has lost his job and meets all the requirements, can receive the benefit that corresponds to him. ” E. Network.

The president of the Lithuanian Student Union also says that so far the distribution of this benefit has been carried out without reproach: “We have not heard any echo that students cannot receive the benefits. We have not heard any complaints from students in the social space and anyway from people who have applied to the employment service. We can conclude that everything is in order with the benefits. “

While it is not difficult to obtain the benefit after registering with the Employment Service, the students reveal that they were not even aware of this possibility.

Gita, a student at Kaunas University of Technology, says she has not heard of such a benefit: “I don’t know anything about these benefits. I’ve only heard of benefits for schoolchildren and retirees, and no student benefits, although they are really necessary. When you are not working, you have to think about how to pay for the bedroom, to live. I still want to help my parents. “

According to the Employment Service, since June 2,578 people have been granted job search benefit: 1,691 of them received 200 euros and another 887 got an additional Social Security benefit for unemployment provided by Sodra.
