We are talking about the island, which has not been heard by everyone, with Sigita Samoškaitė, the head of the tourism group at the Vilnius Central Office of the tourism organizer West Express, who is currently visiting the island.
– Sigita, most people don’t really know where and who Thas Island is.
– In addition to the islands of Crete, Rhodes, Kos or Mykonos, which are well known to Lithuanians, there are other no less impressive places in Greece that we know less about, because they are not so popular yet. One of them is the island of Thasos. Today, the little-known island of Greece is also proud that there are no people with coronavirus on it. Therefore, when choosing where to vacation in Greece, it is very important to pay attention not only to the general situation of the country, but also to the different regions and islands.
This island has always been appreciated by those who want a quiet and authentic vacation. Today those who care about safety also contributed. In just a few hours, after leaving Lithuania, you can enjoy the peace, the warm sea, the beaches that have turned wild, of course, fresh and authentic dishes, traditional Greek evenings.
– How to get to the island of Thasos? Are there direct flights from Lithuania?
– The island is small, there is no airport. Direct flights from Vilnius to Kavala operate once a week on Tuesdays. The flight lasts only 2 hours. The airport is small, with only one plane landing at a time, so all procedures are done very quickly. The funny and unusual thing is that it takes about 15 minutes to get to Kavala airport, which is located in mainland Greece. drive to the seaport and take a huge stable ferry for about 40 minutes. and to the island of Thasos itself.

For travelers, it is really cool entertainment: children are happy, because it is a fun attraction for them, adults, as if on a tour, can calmly observe the charming views of the coast, the changing colors of the sea, the seagulls around. Those who yearn for the sun see the first rays of the Greek sun on the ferry – they are sunbathing here. The ferry is in a very good mood, because it is the beginning of the holidays.
– What is the best way to travel around the island?
– The current difference on the island differs from the previous one only in that it is necessary to have one more item: wear a protective mask, which may be necessary in a store or on the bus. The beauties of the island of Thasos are beaches, coastal cliffs, archaeological sites in the open air, cozy little villages. There is nothing that a curious tourist cannot see on this island. It is recommended to book organized excursions or rent a car on the island to visit the most beautiful places. Safe, simple and convenient.

The car rental price starts from 30 euros per day. Renting for a longer period of time reduces the price. Due to the small number of tourists, local transport runs less frequently. I just had to analyze the timetable posted at the bus stop: to certain towns on the island, the bus runs only 3, 4 or 5 times a day. That is why it is better not to waste time and waste time.
– Lithuanian spas are full of people today. How is Rate now?
– Today on the island of Thasos is a really wonderful time to relax and travel. There are always places on the white sand island beaches, which are found throughout the entire island. Limane, Tripiti, Paradise, Psila Ammos – these are beaches that cannot be overlooked. You can enjoy them for a few hours on the beaches that used to be popular with tourists and have gone wild today.

There is always a free table in the best taverns on the island. Sun loungers are always available on the hotel’s beaches, although mainly from the sea. No rush, no traffic jams, no shifts for a better shot in beautiful places. Good and pleasant service wherever you go, because now every customer is the most important thing here. By the way, I noticed that many of our compatriots who longed to spend a vacation here, it is Lithuanian and Greek, at least for us, that are most frequently spoken on the island during the entire vacation.
– What specific towns on the island would you recommend visiting?
– The island is small, so in one trip you will visit everything. Surrounded by greens, pine trees and olive trees, the island’s capital, Limenas or as it is often simply called Tasu, is famous for its historical sites, ancient city ruins, forts and temples, a breathtaking walk, the streets of the old town old.
It is interesting to visit the mountains Theologians village. In early summer, there was a fun celebration here – a Greek wedding. Perhaps this celebration will be reborn next summer. Earlier Potos the resort was the least peaceful: lots of bars, nightclubs, water entertainment. Much calmer here today.

Authentic Astridos the village will attract wildlife lovers, and here is the one close by Giola lagoon – for lovers of swimming. For those who like to climb mountains, don’t miss the top of Mount Ipsario, which offers an impressive panorama. If you don’t want to climb, you can get to the top by ATV or mountain bike. The area around Limenaria is famous for its beautiful beaches.
– If you had to briefly list the advantages of the island, what would they be?
– Short distances between beaches and other places of interest, so there is little time to spend by bus or car. The main road winds around the island, so you can take in the spectacular views of the coastline, wherever you look, wherever you go. There are fun places to spend the night, but it is not an island of loud parties. The island is famous not only for its tranquility and authenticity, but also for its marble mines, there is even a marble beach, so named. Marble beach.

The color of the water around the marble and its dust acquires an indescribable hue. With photos, one can jokingly fool anyone that they are the most authentic Maldives. The marble banks also look very impressive: large blocks of marble polished with time and water.
– For many, it is probably interesting to compare prices. What’s on the island?
– This is a virgin island for tourists, and the Greeks themselves also rest here. Perhaps that is why the prices here are lower than on the popular and most popular tourist islands. It is often joked that it is often cheaper here than in Lithuania. Greek coffee is available for 1.5 euros, a plate of various seafood costs 12 euros for two people, a half-liter jug of Greek wine – 5 euros, Greek salad – 4-5 euros. The vast majority of Greek dishes will cost less than 10 euros. And if the price is higher, then the portion may be such that you have to share.

– What are the prices of entertainment, have they changed since last year?
– The prices on the island are the same as before, because they have never been specifically increased due to the abundance of tourists. Let’s say you can rent a small boat for 100 euros that you can drive yourself. It is also possible to rent a yacht. Its price is 150-200 euros, depending on the size of the yacht. If you travel with two or three families, and perhaps a group of friends, this is definitely a very attractive option to get to know the island, stop to swim in the most beautiful beaches, enjoy the coasts that are really beautiful here.
– When traveling today, safety comes first. You mentioned that there are no infected people on the island. What security requirements must the island meet?
– All those arriving in their own vehicles must report a negative test result. A significant proportion of those who arrived by plane were also recorded. The Greeks are really trying and working fast on that. The island itself, as I mentioned, is really safe. Both locals and tourists are aware and cultural. Hygiene and wearing masks in the correct places have become as common as wearing a seat belt when getting into a car. Masks should be worn on buses and in shops, but they are not necessary in hotels.

– Tell us more about the hotels on the island and the changes in them.
– Hotels fill about 20-30 percent. and strives to do everything possible so that vacationers get nowhere. Vacationers have repeatedly heard that upgraded rooms, with better views, or other benefits were offered upon arrival. As the hotels are not full, they try to pamper their guests. It is not necessary to use protective masks in hotels, the same applies in the restaurant, by the pool and by the sea. It is true that the staff themselves wear gloves and masks.
The hotel staff serve meals in the restaurant. There are many options, do not be humbled, it can be uncomfortable to order another dish that you like, because the staff puts it so much more that you even have to stop. The restaurants and cafes have outdoor tables, so the atmosphere is not only cozy and pleasant, but also cool, because the weather on the island is fabulous at the moment.
Most hotels do not have entertainment, contact games, animation, children’s clubs. If it does, there are some limitations. Some hotels offer wonderful evenings with live music. In general, Greek customs, like traditional Greek evenings, are one of the most interesting connecting elements of the country’s culture.
– What would you like to travel to this island?
– First of all, I would like not to be afraid and relax, because the island is really safe. If you really want to relax, enjoy the sun, the quiet, the amazing mornings or the authentic and cozy Greek afternoons, this place is a great choice. Have a good trip!
