For Ingrida’s relatives, her grandmother’s funeral caused great pain not only because of the loss of a loved one, but also because of the difficult behavior of Algirdas Petras Kanapka, the parish priest of Skardupiai parish near Marijampolė. The latter did not allow another priest to bury his parishioner and stayed in the masonry at the entrance to the cemetery.
According to Ingrida, the relatives did not want the pastor A. P. Kanapka, pastor of Skardupiai parish, to accompany the deceased to eternal rest; According to the woman, the family had repeatedly encountered the priest’s misconduct.
Upon reaching the cemetery, Kanapka stands “at the gate” and says, “You can’t open the hearse” and not even take out the coffin.
“When we were burying my grandmother, we had invited another priest, because all the priests that we approached rejected her and practically expelled her from the church when we said that we wanted to bury my grandmother in the Skardupiai cemetery. Rejected because everyone is in conflict with the priest A. P. Kanapka: does not allow singers, leaders. Before that, we buried my grandmother’s sister and husband, there were such circuses, he made fun of his relatives, the dead, so we did not want this priest, ”Ingrida explained.
When asked why she wanted to bury the deceased in the cemetery, the woman said it was her grandmother’s will. “We went and begged all the priests to sanctify the coffin and the eternal resting place, because the grandmother’s will was to lie down with the sister, near the house. Since all the priests were rejected, I called the priest of Keturvalakiai and begged him to accompany his grandmother to eternal rest. He agreed to help us: he had mass in the morning, then he came to the funeral home, consecrated himself, prayed and accompanied his grandmother to the car, but said that he could not go to the cemetery because he received a message from the priest that he was burying his parish . As far as I know, even the bishop informed the priest not to go to this cemetery, because the priest of Skardupiai does not let him in, ”Ingrida said about the incomprehensible behavior of the faithful.
The pastor in the cemetery stood on the wall: I will bury myself
No one helps us, we cannot get him out of here, we cannot go to church, weddings or baptisms, or, in the end, to bury our loved ones.
“When we got to the cemetery, we already knew that we would not have a priest, the place would still be impious. The four-necked priest asked to call after all and tell me how everything had gone; he was very loving. We arrive at the cemetery, A. P. Kanapka is standing at the door and says: catafalkos you can’t open it and not even take out the coffin. He stood on the wall and almost said it was his territory. She says, “I’ll bury her myself.” But we, the loved ones, after the funeral of my grandmother’s sister and her husband, who we had with him, we simply did not want this priest. He gave us so much in the town in twelve years that now we are collecting signatures to get him out of the parish. But nobody helps us, we can’t get him out of here, we can’t go to church, weddings or baptisms, or, in the end, bury our loved ones ”, Ingrida spared no words of criticism to the pastor.
According to the woman, the pastor smiled at the cemetery gate, causing even more grief to the relatives of the deceased grandmother. ‘A. Mr. Kanapka did not let in singer, the leader we had brought. Then the leader asked us if we wanted this priest. We answered unanimously: no. The facilitator offered to lead the entire procession into the coffin pit, we agreed. But the priest still did not withdraw, he smiled, he looked us directly in the eyes, he saw how much pain we were in. Some people just took it and grabbed it, ”Ingrida recalled, regretting the painful moment.
The woman also shared a video with journalists from the portal that shows the confusion of loved ones at the entrance to the cemetery. When a man asked the pastor if he would not miss the coffin, A. Kanapka briefly replied, “I will bury myself.” The relatives did not hide their despair and resented: “We don’t want to.” Finally, a neighbor pushed the pastor aside and the coffin was still carried to the cemetery.
“We took the coffin to the burial site, and the priest rode on wheels and filmed us. We had no priest by the grave. My grandmother was a very hopeful person: she went to church every Sunday with this priest A. P. Kanapka. She does each Christmas took him home, fed him, waited for him. But we cannot even go to this priest to confess, because at Mass he counts all the confessed sins. During the funeral of my grandmother’s sister and her husband, he absolved us of atheists. The daughters cried at the coffin of the grandmother’s sister, and he turned and said: “It is not necessary to sneeze, but to pray,” the woman related about the pastor’s behavior.
We wanted to escort the grandmother of honorable age to eternal rest in an honorable way, and she did so.
After the funeral, Ingrida went to the Keturvalakiai priest, who, according to her relatives, also had to bury her grandmother. “I called him. The priest said:” It is inhuman, it is not appropriate for a priest to do it and yet it is such a difficult time. “The man, tormented for a whole month between life and death, finally came out We wanted to accompany the grandmother of honorable age to the eternal rest with honor, and she did so ”, Ingrida did not hide her pain.
When asked if the Skardupiai priest offered help, the woman stated that all the priests were afraid of A. P. Kanapka. “Everyone is afraid, the people here in the village are intimidated. We have been trying for twelve years, trying … But we failed. Such things already go beyond human borders, ”said Ingrida.
The pastor did not want to speak
When journalists from the portal contacted the parish priest of Skardupiai A. P. Kanapka, he did not want to comment on the situation by phone. “Listen, if you want to talk to me, come to Skardupiai, okay? And let’s talk. I will be waiting for you in Skardupiai, but you must let me know in advance when you will arrive,” said the pastor.
When the pastor asked again if we could still talk on the phone, he refused and interrupted the conversation. “Everything, I end the conversation. I said what I could say. Goodbye, ”A. P. Kanapka replied briefly.
When the parish priest refused to comment, journalists from the portal approached the Diocese of Vilkaviškis. It is true that no specific explanation has been given as to why Pastor A. Kanapka is allowed to do so. “Pastor A. P. Kanapka wanted to bury his parishioner. Sorry, goodwill is always needed. From what I understand, he wanted to accompany his parishioner, ”said Bishop General Vicar Mgr. OL. lic. Gintautas Kuliešius.
When G. Kuliešius asked if it was human for the pastor to stand on the cemetery wall and not allow a priest chosen by Ingrida and her relatives to lead the funeral procession,
“Here the priests had to reconcile, talk in some way,” the priest did not say much.
The journalists of the portal have not been able to contact the representatives of the Vilkaviškis district and the Marijampolė municipalities until now. After receiving the comments of the representatives, we will complement the publication.
