LNK journalists spoke with Birutė, who has been driving a trolleybus in Vilnius for 38 years, she calls herself a fresh-baked retiree. The woman has already reached a lump sum of € 200. The senior says the extra money won’t mix, but she would have done it without it.

“As what a person needs, some have little, others have little. And besides, I have a granddaughter, I will go to first grade, I will use that money, I will buy her something, a tablet for distance education or something else. Do you know how to surrender ? If you give in, you will not give up, “said the interlocutor.

For the rest of the elderly, a supplement of 200 euros to the pension as a drink of fresh air.

“Sir, I have a lot of money to spend here. I will be able to buy medicines that I cannot buy, I need something on my feet, I need to fix my TV, I need firewood, it’s 200 euros, a lot of money,” said a retiree.

Another said their needs were much less.
“No, I have not yet received the money to pay in August promised at the end of June. But so far nothing. I will spend most of the money on medicine, more fruit can be bought, it will be useful,” said another woman.

The third party promised to give the money to his grandson.

“The fact that I don’t need anything now,” he explained.

In Lithuania, about 600 thousand people have reached retirement age. there are still about 70 thousand Lithuanians working. Over the decade, working retirees have increased by 5 percent and now thousands are looking for ways to get extra money.

“Today there are 3.3 thousand people registered in the employment service and who receive old-age pensions. Of these, 3.1 thousand. they are self-employed and are registered with the service to receive the self-employment assignment. Meanwhile, last year 133 of these people were registered, ”said Giedrė Vitė, representative of the Employment Service.

A single payment of 200 euros has already reached 60 thousand. retired and disabled. By the end of the month, the money will reach everyone, around 900 thousand. persons. A total of 182 million euros will be disbursed.

Sodra spokeswoman Malgožata Kozič explained when retirees can expect to receive money.

“People who receive pensions at home or collect them at the post office will also receive lump sums on a regular schedule, August 10-26,” he said.

Authorities say pensioners have received an additional benefit of € 200 for the damage they have suffered as a result of the pandemic.

The Deputy Minister of Social Security and Labor, Eglė Radišauskienė, rejects criticism that pensioners have suffered the least from the infection.

“During this period, people have really experienced a lot of financial stress: people are older. It is not true that they are not going anywhere, so they have not suffered any harm. But they experienced it, they were provided additional psychological services, they visited to doctors because stress caused disorders, ”E. Radišauskienė told LNK news reporters.

Such government arguments surprise the experts at the Free Market Institute. They explain that the money to start paying retirees is on loan, so giving out easy money is irresponsible.

“Old-age pension beneficiaries, or people who receive other types of fixed benefits, have not seen a decrease in their income. And in fact, it even grew a bit, ”said Ieva Valeškaitė, an expert from the institute.

The governors have been heavily criticized by the opposition for the € 200 benefits for the elderly. It is said that retirees are being applauded in the run-up to the Seimas elections.
