Analysts say about 600 thousand. The population of the city, located on the border with China, is showing strong resistance to Moscow’s policies, which in turn should give Russian President Vladimir Putin a headache.
The demonstrations ignited with the sudden arrest of the People’s Governor of Khabarovsk in a murder case, but since then the discontent of the population has spread to other areas and has been directed against the Kremlin.
The protesters demand that the regional governor, Sergei Furgal, be released or tried in Khabarovsk.
In recent weeks, Russians who support the people of Khabarovsk have taken to the streets in many Russian cities, although these rallies have not been very large. But several Russian activists have urged compatriots to take to the streets across the country next Saturday, August 14.
