An Air India Express plane crashed at Korikoda airport in Kerala, but the fire probably did not.

The company said there were more than 190 passengers and crew on board.

News18 reported, according to anonymous sources, that the liner chassis was defective.

“I am organizing city hospitals to receive injured passengers and I can confirm the deaths of two people,” local police Sujith Das told AFP.

“There are also injuries, but I still don’t have them,” he added.

A senior state official said the plane’s pilot was killed in the incident. The media reported that dozens of passengers had been taken to the hospital and that at least 20 of them were in critical condition.

Dozens of ambulances arrived at the scene.

A report from Air India Express said there were “no reports of a fire upon landing.”

The company said there were 174 passengers, 10 young children and five crew members on board.

“According to initial reports, rescue operations are underway; passengers are transported to hospitals to receive medical attention ”, added the company.

“There are rescue operations, but the rain makes work difficult,” a rescue official told AFP, who wanted his name not to be made public.

Television reports show rescuers working in the dark, throwing debris onto the siding.

It has been raining heavily in Kerala in recent days.
