About 6,000 tonnes of sewage sludge is expected to be incinerated at the Fortum power plant this year. The Klaipedos Vanduo company estimates that it accumulates approximately 1,000 tons per month. Once drained, you will be transported to Fortum.

It is estimated that around 500 truck sludge should arrive here by the new year. A heavy machine delivers 12 to 15 tons of this waste. They are mixed with other waste incinerated by the company and converted into energy. The incineration service costs Klaipėdos vanduo 33 euros excluding VAT per ton of waste, so it will cost about 200 thousand euros to burn the amount.

Benitas Jonikas, CEO of Klaipėdos Vanduo, who started managing the company in the spring of this year, says the goal is to stop accumulating new, fresh and odorous sludge at the sites, and reduce the existing amount in ten years by burning 400 tons per year. Akmenės cementas company will also burn some 2,000 tons of sludge.

B. Jonikas states that the company pays great attention to odor reduction in Klaipeda. Some 250 thousand euros have been earmarked for this. One of the measures is the removal of sludge from the site on the outskirts of Klaipėda, in Dumpiai.

“We have a sewage treatment plant in Dumpiai. For a good decade, since 2009, the contaminated and drained sludge is transported and stored there. One site is completely accumulated, the other is practically accumulated. There was an expectation on the part of the city, our shareholder, to reduce the volume. We are committed to reducing the amount of sludge in protected areas. We plan to reduce at least 400 tons per year, “said B. Jonikas.

Currently, more than 100 thousand. tons of that mud. It is drained and almost composted, the dried mud no longer emits the smell. The company has plans to communicate with farmers who, depending on the crops being grown, could use this compost to fertilize the soil.

Small amounts of sludge have been incinerated in recent years, totaling about 8,000. Now he promises to do it consistently.

There is a small amount in total traffic.

Donatas Petronis, director of Fortum Klaipėda, said that the total waste stream contains only a very small amount of sludge. Most of it is waste, which the company can incinerate 255 thousand tons per year, so 6,000 tons of sludge is only a small part.

“There is nothing in the total flow due to the increased emissions from the technology used. We have tried to burn the mud. The manufacturers plan to incinerate the sludge. Activated carbon is used, small amounts of heavy metals are collected. Dioxins, furans, end up in fly ash and are exported from Lithuania. This is a sustainable way of managing sludge, avoiding bad odors ”, said the manager.

According to B. Jonikas, sludge management is a headache for all water management companies.

It is estimated that the immediate removal of the sludge residues already accumulated at the site would cost the company around 6 million. euros. This would be in response to the price of water and sewer. The objective is to manage the sludge gradually so that the costs for the company are not too extreme and the burden is not felt by consumers, whose company has about 100,000.
