Asta Ranonytė, deputy director of the National Agency for Education, evaluated the latest results of the maturity tests on Wednesday morning. According to her, the results have not been better since last year.

“Compared to last year, the results are definitely not better, the percentage of non-survivors has almost doubled. This was not a completely surprising trend, as we see that the math test has not been rewarding in recent years. And when it comes to the 2020 graduating class, it’s hard to speak, because 2 years ago we saw that their and the Basic Education Achievement Tests (PUPP)
the results did not indicate that a breakthrough could be expected. It is very unfortunate that today the results are as follows, “said the interlocutor on Wednesday morning.

A. Ranonytė stated that it is too early to discuss the reasons for such results. However, it is already clear that students do not have mathematical thinking, even when it comes to simple and realistic math problems.

“We cut the information into several sections. We looked at what the homework was, what it checked, whether the students learned it in school. It’s really hard to talk when the 10-point homework was devoted to the elementary mathematics of life, which simply required Solve simple linear equations, which students begin learning in another seventh grade, to find the average percentage.

Of the students who did not pass the exam, only 20-30 percent completed these tasks. It is really very difficult to talk about mathematical thinking, the logic of the real and verified by this topic. We have problems with basic thinking skills, ”said A. Ranonytė on the show“ Delfi rytas ”.

The interlocutor recalled in the program that without passing the compulsory mathematics exam, students will not be able to apply for places financed by the State in Lithuanian higher education institutions.

“There are almost 5 thousand students, it is likely that they will all receive certificates of maturity, they will be able to finish school, because the mathematics exam is optional, but the result of this exam is necessary when entering Lithuanian higher education institutions and applying for a funded place by the state. For this part of the graduates, it is likely that they have already done it, review and plan B, not necessarily choose studies, but start working, “said the interlocutor.

As announced by the National Education Agency on Wednesday morning, 15,241 candidates took the state matriculation exam in mathematics. Exam pass limit: 15 percent. of 100 or 9 points of 60 task points.

67.61 percent passed the exam. candidates (in 2019 – 82.09% of candidates). One hundred points received a score of 0.96 percent. candidates (1.46% in 2019).
