Prison security officials found the animal in a strict regimen at Velikada prison on Saturday, a police officer said.

According to him, almost 2 g of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip were found in a small bag tied around the cat’s neck.

But on Sunday, the four-legged escaped from the prison facilities where he was being held, the Aruna newspaper said.

Prison officials have yet to comment on these reports.

According to the correctional center, there has been an increase in incidents in recent weeks of small bags of drugs, mobile phones and their chargers being thrown across borders.

Sri Lanka is currently facing a major drug problem, and even some law enforcement officers are linked to the trade in confiscated illegal substances.

Last week, police seized an eagle suspected of being used by drug traffickers to distribute drugs in a Colombo suburb.
