Customs officials took millions of rubles and hundreds of thousands of euros from Russian smugglers over the weekend.

On July 31, around 12 noon, two Russian citizens who arrived in Lithuania by truck from Belarus said they carried nothing prohibited, only transporting cargo to Russia’s Kaliningrad region. However, after inspecting the tractor cab, 3 million undeclared were found in the bag. rubles (34 634 Eur). Only then did the two men remember that the purpose of the trip was to sell the car for which they had received the money, supposedly, and to take it home.

Customs officials stopped the cash smuggling, and the preventive detention measure for both criminals was the seizure of documents, reports the Criminal Customs Service.

Customs officials at the Medininkai road post stopped an even larger smuggling of money the following day, on August 1, when a Belarusian citizen arrived at the post by truck. The latter said that he was going to take the load, but neither did he declare the money he had: 213 thousand. Euros Customs officers found them among the driver’s personal belongings, hidden in a backpack and wrapped in duct tape.

Then the foreigner began to explain that there had been a misunderstanding that it was his family’s money that he had transported to Lithuania to be delivered to a family member and simply did not declare it.

However, these explanations did not convince officials, the money was detained, and the detainee was detained.

Due to both cases of money smuggling, pre-trial investigations have been launched at the Criminal Customs Service (CCS), which are under the responsibility of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Each person who enters the Republic of Lithuania from a third country (or leaves Lithuania to a third country) and transports at least 10,000.
