The plaza was created exclusively by architects, engineers, and other specialists from the coastal region. The Mayor of Palanga, Šarūnas Vaitkus, says that for a long time only in summer this place was given life for children, and that he wanted the resort’s settlement to be attractive not only in the hot season. So, with the help of the architects, it was decided that from now on there would be an exclusive space in the settlement, with enough space for the elderly who want to relax and for the little ones who never give up on entertainment.
The coastal hills, the dunes and the vegetation reflect the square, according to Mayor Š. Vaitkus shows that in five years Šventoji is clearly changing, the investment makes the coastal settlement increasingly attractive to both guests and newcomers.
“The saint never had a central plaza where people would gather for events. Until now, events have taken place near the port or on the main street. Then, with the Šventoji community, we came up with the idea that this plot would not be used for the construction of buildings, but to create a public and cultural space where we could meet and celebrate. The concerts will take place here. This square together with the building will be handed over to the Center for Culture and Youth, they will carry out educational programs for children, there will be a reading room, a café to keep that square alive. Also, one wall of the building will be used to show movies, and the entire building will be adapted as a stationary scene, “says Š. Silence.
The mayor shares that the quest to create a square full of life has come true before the opening is announced.
“It was enough to remove the fences that surrounded the plaza and the plaza was already full of people. The children immediately ran on trampolines, games, people came to sit on the benches. Even without the opening, the plaza came alive,” he smiles. Š Silence.
Mantas Daukšys, who created the plaza, says that anything abandoned and empty is sad, so it was decided to create a plaza with everything from a parking lot to free entertainment.
“There is a separate space for the elderly and a separate space for children in the plaza. A clock made with Curonian motifs will soon appear in the square. And those motifs are in place here, in the writings of the grandmother who lived in Šventoji, so it was recorded and repeated in the square. This is the history of our country, after all, it is part of Livonia, which only became part of Lithuania before the war. So Šventoji’s Curonian past is very much alive in the local community. Together with them, we discovered this solution so that the ornaments would emphasize that identity and make it interesting for visitors ”, says the architect.
According to the creator of the square, the squares generally adapt to political life, and here they did not want to forget all the people in the settlement, from the oldest to the smallest. During the warm season, a dancing and singing fountain will soon be housed under the open sky, designed as a mini maze. In the cold season, educational programs and events will be held in the pavilion. There is also a place for a Christmas tree in the same place, so the square will be the center of attraction throughout the year.
According to the mayor of Palanga, soon this year, the infrastructure management of the port of Sventoji is also planned. Š. According to Vaitkus, around 80 percent of Lithuanians travel to relax on the beach, so they want to make just 25 kilometers of Lithuanian beaches as attractive and comfortable as possible for everyone.
