This law, which ended at the end of the Seimas session, was urgently adopted after the opening of an artificial sand beach in Lukiškės Square on the initiative of Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius. Not only the rulers but also the conservatives and some historians were outraged by the dumped beach. According to them, the square where the tragic events took place is not a suitable place for such entertainment.
The adopted law states that Lukiškės Square is the main representative square of the Lithuanian state. In accordance with the adopted law, the plaza must be formed with accents commemorating the freedom struggles and administered in such a way as to guarantee seriousness and due respect to the fighters who died for independence and to the rebels who sacrificed their lives in 1863-1864.
The law also stipulates that the Vytis monument representing the state symbol, along with the monument to the victims of the victims of Lithuanian freedom, will have to be the main accent of the representative square of Lithuania.
Lukiškės Square highlighted political disagreements
Opponents criticize the law passed by the Seimas, arguing that it is a possible unconstitutional attempt to introduce a direct government in Lukiškės Square. Others emphasize that the sensitive issues of historical memory must be addressed not through binding laws but through debate.
Meanwhile, another part of the politicians affirms that not only can there be no beach in Lukiškės Square, but that the Vytis Monument must be built there.
Ramūnas Karbauskis, one of the initiators of the adopted law, has even hinted that in order to avoid the problems that arose in making Lukiškės Square meaningful, the lease of Lukišk des Square to the Vilnius city municipality should be terminated. For his part, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has also stated that the Government should take over the management of Lukiškės Square.
Minister: decisions on Lukiškės square, only after the conclusions of the lawyers
However, as Culture Minister Mindaugas Kvietkauskas said last week, there is no rush to make decisions regarding the implementation of the Lukiškės Square law. According to him, the ministry under his leadership is waiting for the lawyers’ conclusion.
At the same time, the Minister pointed out that in order to make sense of Lukišk plazas Square, it would be necessary to take into account not only the law approved by the Seimas, but also the court’s conclusions on competition, during which it was decided to build the work ” Freedom Hill “by Andrius Labašauskas.
“The situation is not simple, there is still a demand on ‘Freedom Hill’ as the winners of the creative workshops. All of these aspects must be evaluated,” M. Kvietkauskas explained to Knowledge Radio on Tuesday.
ELTA recalls that 78 Seimas members voted in favor of the Law on the Commemorative Status of Lukiškės Square, 11 against and 4 deputies abstained. President Gitanas Nausėda, who signed the law on July 10, said he had done it to “avoid political intrigue.”
