Europe is overwhelmed by a heat wave: countries announce danger

Starting in the UK and ending in Italy on Friday, temperatures in some European countries rose to below 40 degrees Celsius. In such heat, it was extremely difficult for many to wear masks.

“Even in this heat, I think it is better to tolerate 38 degrees Celsius than to get a coronavirus,” said Daniela Iannelli, a 55-year-old worker in Rome.

The danger has been announced in fourteen Italian cities, and France has issued warnings in about a third of the country’s 101 departments.
Paris authorities have also announced traffic restrictions aimed at reducing ozone pollution, according to the country’s traffic control agency.

“Due to the heat wave, residents must remain vigilant and cautious,” said French Prime Minister Jean Castex, who visited fire brigades in southeastern France.

A forest fire on the southwest Atlantic coast was extinguished in France a little earlier on Friday. The fire in the region destroyed ten homes and forced at least 100 people to evacuate.

Authorities also urged families and neighbors to check up on how older people are feeling, and there was concern at the nursing home, as air conditioners are currently being urged not to use it.

In France, the increase in new cases of COVID-19 in recent days has tightened the rules for wearing masks, and in some cities the masks must now be worn outdoors, which is particularly difficult since the thermometer column is approaches 40 degrees centigrade.
