In April 2019, officials from the Pagėgiai border team, the Vištytis border guard, detected two people through the video surveillance system within the village of Galkiemis, Vilkaviškis district.
One of the men on the Lithuanian side entered the pipeline and landed on Russian territory. I will be back soon.
His accomplice monitored the environment and prevented agents from the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) from catching him.
They were detained by officers from the SBGS Pagėgiai Border Team Special Purpose Team. For the officers who detained them, the men said they were involved in hunting beavers.
“Regardless of the purpose of crossing the state border (even if a person is hunting or proliferating), it is important that it be done illegally and cross the external border of the European Union. An alien will be released from criminal liability if he has entered illegally for the purpose to exercise the right of asylum or in order to move from the territory of Lithuania to a third country, if such person is deported to the country from which he crossed the Lithuanian border or to the country, says prosecutor Vytautas Nacikūnas, who directed and controlled the pre-trial investigation and supported state prosecution in court.
The convicted men are known to the border guards and have already been smuggled.
It is speculated that the purpose of this “journey” through the pipeline may have been smuggling, only this plan, for some reason, failed the residents of the Vilkaviškis district.
The sentence can be appealed within 20 days from the date of its publication, reports the prosecution.
