Is it worth pouring more expensive fuel: what you earn at an additional cost

Jonas Matijošius, Associate Professor and Doctor of Science, Department of Automotive Engineering, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), emphasizes that it is important to understand that if a manufacturer claims that the fuel it sells has some properties, it can prove that this statement is true.

At the same time, the expert emphasized, it also means that refueling a car with the proper fuel with various additives cannot harm the vehicle in any way. According to him, such a situation is difficult to imagine that the manufacturer risks on his own behalf.

“Oh, apparently, there is nothing worse than the rumor that some service stations have bad fuel: people will stop filling tanks there,” said the expert.

However, the researcher is particularly skeptical about some of the drivers’ habits. According to him, one is the additives in the fuel of the service station, the other is the additives that the drivers refuel, believing that these improve certain characteristics of the car.

“Now it is popular to pour and choose accessories for you, and then to say that something works, works well and the like. But I find this practice reserved, since any annex can be incompatible with each other. That is, when adding some additives, they can eliminate the good effect of the additives that are already in the fuel, ”emphasized the expert.

According to him, it is quite natural that the additives dumped by drivers do not have the same effect as the additives chosen by fuel manufacturers, because this year they have been working in laboratories trying to obtain some positive effect and announce it out loud and consider it their commercial advantage.

You will not find fuel without additives.

According to the interlocutor, all modern fuels have complex additives, a mixture of several compatible additives, which improves not only one, but many properties of the fuel.

For example, diesel contains additives that improve its ignition, making the car easier to start and fuel to burn better.

Also, almost all fuels contain detergents. The latest detergents prevent the formation of resinous fuel turbidity on the walls of the fuel system components and protect the plate system.

Cold flow additives are also added to diesel to ensure that diesel flows easily even before it reaches operating temperature. Among other things, turbidity, freezing and freezing temperature additives are added, which allow the fuel to maintain its properties at lower temperatures and ensure that the wax crystals formed in the fuel at negative temperatures do not clog the fuel system.

Now it’s popular to pour and choose accessories for you, and then to say that something works, works well, and the like. But I find this practice reserved.

In addition, there are special additives that inhibit the growth of wax crystals; they also ensure that large wax crystals do not clog filters in the fuel system.
According to the scientist, additives that slow down oxidation processes are added to the fuel, which allows the properties of the fuel to be preserved for a longer time, since it protects them from the formation of tar and sediments. This is especially important when the fuel needs to be stored for a long time.

The fuel is also packed with additives that maintain transparency and reduce turbidity, preventing the formation of emulsions. This is especially important in cases where water enters the fuel, which disperses into small droplets and clouds the fuel.

In addition, additives that inhibit the growth of microflora and microfauna are added to the fuel. In addition to these, antistatic additives are added. These are especially necessary when fuel is pumped from one tank to another. Because the electrostatic charge then formed can, for example, cause gasoline vapors to ignite easily.

Foam additives are also very important, because when the fuel tank fills up very quickly, it is important that the liquid poured into it does not foam. Furthermore, J. Matijošius noted that reodorants are added to diesel, the task of which is to remove the very unpleasant odor from diesel. So if a person spills on diesel while refueling, the smell will be much lower than it could be.

In addition to all this, lubricating additives are added to the fuel. They are necessary because pollution reduction seeks to remove as much sulfur as possible from the fuel, and is extremely useful in terms of lubrication properties. So when you replace it, additives are added to the fuel to ensure the parts of the fuel pump are lubricated.

Who can feel the effect?

When the scientist was asked if a common driver could feel the positive effects of the additives added to the fuel, J. Matijošius smiles. According to him, if the manufacturer boasts of some properties, it means that those fuels have those properties and this can be proven under certain conditions.

However, for drivers to feel that effect, refueling once or twice will not be enough to refuel.

“You have to drive that fuel for a long time to feel the effect.” The accessories will definitely work, they will do something, they will improve it, but you will hardly feel it as soon as you refuel. And if you refuel once in one place, another in another and another in another, it will hardly get that promising effect, “emphasized the interlocutor.

Fuel with water: is it possible?

The myth that it is possible to refuel with water mixed with water in smaller service stations can hardly be considered true in the opinion of the interlocutor. According to him, such things happened many years ago, especially when there were many small and private service stations in the regions. But now the controls are too big, and nobody wants to risk fines and goodwill.

“Water can actually enter the fuel due to condensation. Then the different material densities will result in lighter ones being pumped, heavier at the bottom and condensate pouring into the controller. However, now the control is such that such a situation is almost impossible in reality, “the interlocutor hesitated, adding that there are no guarantees only if the fuel is purchased illegally.
