Green traffic light section

When the government announced the need to remove the green arrow tables, all cities rushed to redesign traffic crossings to allow car traffic to move as smoothly as possible. The changes did not bypass the intersection of P.Lukšio and S.Žukauskas streets. Drivers are convinced that installing an additional traffic light only makes traffic more difficult.

Antanas from Kaunas presented their observations on the intersection of P.Lukšio and S.Žukauskas streets. According to the man, the traffic here is intense, but the traffic lights are adjusted so that there is often a wait, although according to the installed infrastructure, it would be possible to drive freely.

The driver pointed out that on S.Žukauskas street, near the gas station, there is a newly installed traffic light with an additional section that allows drivers to turn right. There are also lanes drawn at the intersection to allow other road users to maneuver without interfering. However, according to Kaunas residents, such a combination of infrastructure is not fully utilized and does not function quite efficiently.

Who needed to install that green arrow stoplight section if drivers still couldn’t turn right and had to wait?

“Who had to install that section of green arrow traffic light if drivers still can’t turn right and have to wait? Some drivers cross the gas station area and thus turn onto S.Žukauskas street alone So you don’t have to wait until the green signal comes on. It used to be that cars could drive straight and to the right from the first lane. Now you can only turn from this lane. But that section of the traffic light is on for a short time. I think it could burn all the time, because even at the intersection, the lanes were redrawn. Drivers would not bother anyone. The stretch should only exit if pedestrians are green “, Antanas said his opinion on how to improve the flow of traffic at that junction.

He gave an example of another busy intersection and ensured that a similar traffic order could be applied at the intersection of P.Lukšio and S.Žukauskas streets. The man pointed out that a section of green traffic light was also installed at the so-called Murava crossing, which comes from Pramonės avenue. It burns constantly and goes out only briefly if pedestrians cross the street. The difference between these intersections, according to the driver, is just that at the Murava intersection, those turning right from Pramonės avenue are separated from the rest of the car traffic by stakes, and at the S.Žukauskas street turn a P. Lukšio Street there is only one separate lane, but no stakes.

“If you already did all the infrastructure, you invested money, the drivers at this intersection could also keep turning right. Because now that section of the traffic light doesn’t seem to be doing its job and it’s useless. Before the intersection was rebuilt, there was a Green arrow sign at this location. We had to wait less and we were able to turn more freely to the right, “said the driver.

Antanas noted that an additional section of traffic light was installed on one side of the aforementioned intersection. When driving from the other side, the green arrow boards are on the left, so traffic in other directions is much smoother.

Increased car traffic

Due to the fact that when drivers arrive on S.Žukauskas street from the Šiaurės avenue ring, they waste time turning right, traffic jams also occur. The man noticed that they had grown up on Ašigalio Street after opening the entrance from Highway A1.

The Kaunas resident said there is now a much higher flow of traffic from Ašigalio Street to Savanorių Avenue than before. However, at the intersection of S.Žukauskas and P.Lukšis, drivers get stuck also due to the fact that now only one lane of traffic can be driven in this direction.

“If it is not possible to turn freely to the right and you have to wait for the green, then at least the first lane could go straight again. It would be more useful. Because now only the second lane can go straight, the third, turn left In the middle lane, especially at the top, Antanas shared another observation of the traffic regulation at the aforementioned crossing.

Position of traffic specialists

Martynas Matusevičius, head of the Department of Transportation and Traffic Organization of the Kaunas City Municipality, told Kauno Diena that the traffic at the intersection of S.Žukauskas and P.Lukšio streets will be checked and, if the safety specialists of traffic agree, adjustments will be made to improve transportation capacity.

“We have forwarded the Kaunas proposal that the section of the green traffic light on S.Žukauskas Street could stay on for longer and turn off only when pedestrians pass, to the Traffic Control Center for evaluation. We will assess the rationality of the solution and we will make a decision, “said M. Matusevičius.

The head of the department of transportation and traffic management explained why the green arrow sign on the site had been removed. He said that this was due to the entry into force of a new version of the Traffic Regulations in January this year, which removed the tables with a green arrow.

“Changes in the organization of traffic required the identification of the best technical solutions that would ensure traffic safety, maximum traffic flow, maintain the level of traffic quality without deterioration or at least minimal change. These changes were carried out through traffic studies, modeling and selection of existing traffic. regulation of intersections “, – why an additional section of traffic light was installed, explained the traffic specialist.

He noted that later, when the central government allowed the green arrow tables to be returned to the streets, they returned to that crossing. However, they were hung up again where no traffic light adjustments were made. However, it is not ruled out that on S.Žukauskas street, at the gas station, as well as instead of the traffic light section, the table may return.

“We will evaluate the modified car flows and, if we see the possibility of ensuring both the safety of the road users and a better conductivity of the intersection, we will consider the possibility of returning the table at this intersection,” said M. Matusevičius on the unadulterated fixes.

The interlocutor also indicated that the flow of cars will be reassessed, possibly increased after the opening of the entrance to Kaunas on Ašigalio Street. If it turns out that congestion has begun to form on other city streets as a result of this traffic crossing, this will lead to steps being taken to increase performance at intersections.
