No more than 1,700 people participated in the political protests across the country on Saturday, the spokesman said. 114 citizens were arrested for violating the law on mass events, including 99 in Minsk. Of all those detained, 87 remain in custody.

The human rights group Viasnia says most of the recently arrested protesters are women.

However, the opposition promises to hold further protests on Sunday.

Vans of the police and security forces have been deployed in Minsk city center ahead of a new massive demonstration scheduled for Sunday. The protest takes place on the eve of a meeting between President Aliaksandr Lukashenko and his main ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The protests have rocked authoritarian Belarus for five weeks. Unrest in the country broke out after the controversial presidential election, which was officially announced by President Lukashenko. Most Belarusians do not believe in the official results of the presidential elections and believe that they were manipulated.
