On the 11th (local time), the Hong Kong government deprived four legislative members of the legislative assembly. This is because he urged the United States to enact the Hong Kong Human Rights Act, which vindicates Hong Kong’s independence from China.

Experts interpreted that as a measure taken after the election of Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden, who values human rights issues, became a predetermined fact, “Xi Jinping is going his way without worrying about the United States.”

On the same day, the Hong Kong government announced in its official gazette that China’s highest legislative body would deprive legislators of the National People’s Congress (Non-In University), according to the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Alvin Jung, Kukkhaki, Dennis Kwok, and Kenneth Lung.

They explained that they were already disqualified from running in next year’s elections in July because they demanded Hong Kong’s independence and compromised national security by colluding with foreign forces. They visited the United States last year and raised the issue of urging US officials and legislators to enact the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act (Hong Kong Human Rights Act).

The sudden removal from parliamentary office took place on the 10th, the day after the trade committee of Junin University adopted a resolution on the question of the qualifications of the legislative members of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the Council of State, which obliges Hong Kong legislators to have a ‘patriotic spirit’.

The resolution paved the way for the Hong Kong government to disqualify lawmakers without going through legal proceedings for the ambiguous reason that they “had no patriotism.”

When news of the removal from parliament broke, all 15 members of Hong Kong’s pan-democratic camp announced that they would resign. Hong Kong’s legislative assembly has a total of 70 members, and most of the others, except 15, are pro-Chinese.

Fernando Chung, one of the pan-democracy lawmakers, told Bloomberg: “There is no more separation of powers or ‘one country and two systems’ in Hong Kong,” he said. “Therefore, Hong Kong, as we know it, no longer exists.”

Bloomberg analyzed that Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message that Biden would not tolerate opposition to the Communist Party, no matter how much pressure Biden may have. Biden said that during the presidential elections he will strengthen legal sanctions for China, which violates Hong Kong’s sovereignty, and actively tackle human rights abuses against Xinjiang Uighur residents.

“This decision shows that China does not care about the West or the United States,” said Professor Jean Pierre Kavestan of Hong Kong Baptist University, who has written several books on China’s foreign policy and politics.
