This is the fourth time that Director Yoo has visited Europe for the election of the next WTO Secretary General. Despite the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19), electoral campaigns have been held since July in major overseas regions such as Europe and the United States. During this visit to Geneva, more than 100 people were maintained through individual interviews with ministerial-level staff from more than 20 countries, and two receptions. I met with each of the WTO ambassadors in Geneva. At this meeting, General Manager Yoo called for final support, emphasizing the possibility of carrying out WTO reforms based on trade experience. On the 19th, he had a face-to-face interview with the Minister of International Trade, Elizabeth Truss, in London, England. Here, as a similar stance to support the multilateral free trade system, I urged the WTO to support its successful reform.
Headquarters Yoo visited Brussels, Belgium on the 20th. During this visit, he met with the head of the EU’s Chief Executive Vice President, Valdis Dombrovsky, to discuss WTO issues in depth.
In addition, he sought the support of the EU and said that a qualified person with trade experience who can work from day one of the inauguration is needed to normalize the WTO, which is currently in crisis.
Subsequently, General Manager Yoo returned to Geneva and held interviews with ministers from 10 countries.
Through this visit, the Ministry of Industry assessed that a support base has been secured even in Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and Africa before the final final.
