The Legislative Judicial Committee of the National Assembly holds a public hearing on alternative legislation to suspend pregnancy. At the time of the inauguration, another public hearing was held with citizens outside the National Assembly. The Joint Action to Abolish the Crimes of Abortion for All (all abortions) was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the National Assembly on the 8th.4 hours of continuous conversationWe held a press conference. About 30 citizens who participated in ‘Speaking After’ share their stories, stories of friends and mothers affected by the existence of the ‘Crime of abortion’, and the punishment for abortion is not a problem for women of childbearing age, but for all the society. He pointed out that it was a problem. ▶ Shortcut: Special page ‘Abolition of the crime of abortion’ http://www.hani.co.kr/arti/delete Shin Ji-ye, executive director of the Korean Women’s Political Network, told the story of a friend who was pregnant at the age of 20.

My friend, when he was just an adult, unfortunately he was not married and had an unwanted pregnancy. I had to perform artificial abortion surgery to stop the pregnancy, but at the time, the cost of the surgery was very high due to the Lee Myung-bak administration and the Pro-Life Medical Association indicting the obstetricians. At that time, the operation was only possible after paying 3 million won to 5 million won in cash. My friend, who has just turned 20, is not responsible for her boyfriend and has been selling shoes in a department store for 3 months to undergo artificial abortion surgery in a situation where it is difficult to open her hands to her parents.

Representative Shin said: “I would have been anxious. No one takes responsibility and it is becoming more and more complete. She added: “I don’t know how many women in Korea live with bloody tears because it is a crime to stop pregnancy.” He said: “I hope that my friend, who had to sell shoes for three months in a department store, does not appear again in 2021 and 2022. I hope today that there are good results in the Public Hearing of the National Assembly, so that we can move forward with abolition ”.

There was also a story about a mother who stopped the pregnancy without knowing that it was illegal during the Park Chung-hee regime. “My mother had an abortion 40 years ago,” said Kwon Soo-hyun, executive director of the Institute for Gender Policy Research.

I asked my mother why. The main reason was poverty. My mother, who had already had two children, decided that the family was not good enough to have three and decided to have an abortion after consulting with her father. My mother, who was born in a conservative space in Gyeongsang-do and didn’t learn much, was the one who thought about what the state would mean. How could such a mother have an abortion during the Park Chung-hee regime?

Representative Kwon cited the Park Chung-hee regime’s birth control policy at the time as the reason why termination of pregnancy was illegal and not illegal.

My mother said, “At that time, everyone had an abortion and there would be no one who did not.” He said abortion was not illegal. The reason that abortion was not illegal was due to the Park Chung-hee regime’s birth control policy. My mother did not believe that abortion was illegal because the government told me to get better, (my mother) had already had two, and many people around me had had abortions, and the general hospital gave me abortions without asking. Because the state broke the law and encouraged abortion.

Representative Kwon said that the history of the arbitrary application of the law under the national birth policy shows the irrationality of abortion. “Is my mother, who thought that the government’s word was the law, is she a criminal, or the government that enforced the policy in violation of the law? If abortion is a sin, the culprit is the state. ”

A man who is a member of the Women’s Association said: “Abortion abolition is also my job as an LGBT person.”

I live as a man and I live as a homosexual. I am an LGBTQ man. Perhaps someone thinks that I am the one who has nothing to do with the crime of abortion. However, while I participated in the rally to abolish the crime of abortion, which has been going on for several years, I always thought about what the crime of abortion is.

He said that the crime of abortion maintains the normal family model, where women are the mothers of childbirth and men are the fathers who support their families.

The existence of abortion also conveys the message of punishing women when they break the gender role of having and raising children. Will this only affect women? I have been taught that gender is a system and that, like a cogwheel, it can work when multiple elements are intertwined. For women to be forced to assume the gender role of mother, they also need the gender role of father of men for this to be possible. Society gives normality to this life and treats the rest as abnormal or absent. In such a society, people outside the normal family cannot exist freely or equitably. So I would like to say that the abolition of abortion is also my fight.

Speakers criticized the legislative negligence of the National Assembly, which belatedly held a public hearing made up of biased witnesses before the end of the ordinary assembly on the 9th and the legislative deadline on the 31st. Seo-young Lee, member of the Council of Professionals Humanitarians, harshly criticized the negligence of working in the National Assembly.

I don’t know what you’ve been up to now. There are more than 20 days left, is it the responsibility of the Judiciary to hold a public hearing? If elected officials say abortion is a difficult problem, it is lazy and bad. Abortion is not a card that can be taken or discarded for political gains or losses. I hope the National Assembly does not pretend that there are people who die while treating abortion as a troublesome problem due to a large number of stakeholders, or as a problem that can be passed on later.

“Abortion is a sin, that is why the procedure is expressed. Because abortion is a sin, women must wander in search of medicines and hospitals hidden in the shadows. “Abortion is a sin, so we lose adequate medical time and have to personally pay the ridiculously expensive medical bills.” As long as ‘the crime of abortion’ exists in criminal law, the quality of medical practice cannot be adequately managed and the resulting health problems are imposed only on those who must stop the pregnancy. Commissioner Lee said there was no more time to waste because there was so much to do after abortion was abolished.

Even after the crimes of abortion were abolished, there are many things to do. Socio-economic barriers and structural inequalities persist even after no one becomes a sinner through abortion. Congress will run out of time just to get rid of these barriers, but don’t waste your time on a partial hearing.
