The United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) dramatically concluded negotiations on future relations, including trade agreements. Consequently, the UK faces a complete break with the EU four and a half years after the ‘Brexit’ decision via a referendum in June 2016.

The agreement between the two parties came nine months after the start of future relations negotiations in March, and about a week before the end of the transition period until the end of the year.

The UK and the EU announced on the 24th (local time) that they had reached an agreement to negotiate future relations.

In a statement issued today, the British government said: “This agreement has delivered on promises to the people in the 2016 referendum (Brexit) and the general elections (last year).” He said.

“This deal is fantastic news for families and businesses across the UK,” the statement explains. “We have signed a tariff and quota free agreement with the EU for the first time. It is the largest bilateral agreement between us.”

As of 2019, the two-way trade volume amounted to 680 billion pounds (about 1003 trillion won).

The statement also read: “(This agreement) is that the UK will have full political and economic independence as of January 1, 2021.” “He has a fantastic opportunity to sign a deal.”

“We finally reached an agreement,” said the head of the EU administration, Urzula von der Laien, at a post-agreement press conference. It is an agreement that has been reached. It is an appropriate and responsible agreement for both parties. “

“I think this deal also benefits Britain,” said Pon der Raien, “which will lay a solid foundation for a new beginning with an old friend, who can finally put Brexit behind us, and we can’t stop it.” It means that Europe will continue to advance ”.

Michelle Barnier, the EU’s head of negotiations on future EU-UK relations, told a press conference that “the clock will no longer tick” and “today is a day of relief.”

As the UK and the EU conclude negotiations on future relations, the deal must now go through the parliamentary ratification process by both parties.

The British Parliament is currently on Christmas break, but the government is scheduled to meet next week to approve the deal.

The ruling Conservative Party has secured seats far above the majority standard, and the No. 1 opposition Labor Party is also in a position to avoid “no deal”, so it is expected to pass without much difficulty.

On the one hand, the agreement must also go through unanimous approval by the 27 EU member states and ratification by the European Parliament.

Charles Michel, president of the EU summit, said the agreement will be analyzed before the EU summit and the European Parliament approve it.

Previously, the UK withdrew from its member states in late January through a deal with the EU and Brexit.

However, for a smooth transition, we set a transition period until the end of the year to keep everything the same as before Brexit.

The two sides decided to complete negotiations on future relationships during the transition period and start over.

The two sides have been negotiating for nine months since last March, but were unable to reach an agreement until recently, raising concerns about a “no-deal.”

If the two parties cannot reach an agreement before the end of the year, when the transition period ends, the World Trade Organization (WTO) system would apply from next year.

In this case, it was expected that tariffs would be imposed on imported and exported goods and confusion would be inevitable as there would be a non-tariff barrier.
