The number of applicants for the 2021 College Aptitude Test (SAT), which takes place on December 3, dropped to less than 500,000 for the first time since the 1994 SAT was introduced.

In addition, since 2005, the current elective SAT was introduced, and the proportion of graduates, including those who retake, has set a record. With the punctual expansion and overlapping of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) situation, graduates are expected to be strong at the next SAT.

On the 21st, the Korean Institute for Curriculum and Assessment, which is an organization for testing the SAT, announced the results of the SAT 2021 application application. A total of 490.3433 people took the test. Compared to last year, the number of applicants applying for an application decreased by 55,301.

This is the first time since the introduction of the SAT in 1994 that the number of applicants who applied for the SAT has dropped below 500,000. Last year, the number of applicants for the SAT dropped by 46,190 from the previous year. In the past two years, the number of SAT applicants dropped by more than 100,000. The decline in the school-age population is the main cause. Among applicants for this year’s SAT application, the number of third-graders enrolled in high school was 34.6673, 43,351 less than last year. The number of applicants for graduates was 13,069, 9,202 less than the previous year. The number of GED graduates was 1,3691, an increase of 1,252. The number of candidates taking the actual SAT is expected to drop to 430,000. Last year, 54.8734 people applied for the SAT, but only 88.3% or 48.4737 people took the test, showing the highest absenteeism rate in history. Last year was the first time the number of SAT candidates fell to less than 500,000, but this year the decline is expected to increase further.

On this year’s SAT, graduates are expected to be strong. The proportion of graduates among SAT applicants this year was 27.0%, the highest since 2005 when the current optional SAT was introduced. The graduation rate in the last 10 years is 1.1 percentage points higher than 25.9% last year, which was the highest. After 2005, the highest percentage of graduates among SAT applicants was 26.8% in 2006.

Seong-ho Lim, executive director of Sky Education at Jongno Academy, said: “Although the school-age population has decreased, the proportion of graduates is the highest since the current SAT system in 2005.” That is expected ”, he predicted.

Regarding application status by area, the proportion of math applicants who are selected primarily by science students was 33.0% (155720), 0.9% higher than 32.1% (16.7467) last year . The number of Type B math applicants selected by liberal arts students is 3.16039 (67.0%). The proportion of applicants for social research (54.7%) and scientific research (44.1%) was the same as last year.

The expectation of ‘Arabic Lotto’ was still there. The number of candidates who chose the second foreign language and the Chinese language field was 77,174, or 15.6% of the total. This year, 52,443 people, 68.0% of applicants, chose ‘Arabic I’. The second most popular Japanese coach was only 10.8%.

In the relative evaluation system, Arabic is called ‘lotto’ because you can get a high grade by studying a little. It was discovered that last year’s test takers who chose Arabic on the SAT will receive a “4th grade” if they select “1” for all questions (multiple choice). The ‘Arab lottery’ is expected to be last year. Beginning with the 2022 SAT, the second foreign language and Chinese characters will be changed to absolute assessment.
