The number of applicants for the 2021 College Academic Ability Test, which will take effect on December 3 this year, fell to 400,000 for the first time. In 2018, for the first time in history, the number dropped to 500,000, but as the school-age population declined rapidly, in just 3 years, around 100,000 people declined. The proportion of graduates, including repeaters, of all applicants, registered 27.0%, the highest since 2005, when the current SAT system was applied.

According to the ‘SAT 2021 test application results’ announced by the Korean Institute for Curriculum and Assessment on the 21st, the number of applicants for the SAT is 490.3433, a decrease of 55.301 from last year. This is the lowest number since 1994 when the SAT began. The number of applicants for the SAT remained at the 600,000 level after reaching the highest level in 2011 with 71,227, but fell to 500,000 for the first time in 2018.

Among applicants, the number of students enrolled was 34,6673, a decrease of 43,351 from last year. The number of graduates was 13,069, a decrease of 9,202. Although the number of applicants for graduates decreased slightly, the ratio of applicants to all applicants was 27.0%, the highest since 2005 when the current SAT system was introduced. The student re-entry rate has remained in the initial 20% range since it fell to 19.6% in 2014. Recently, the trend has increased significantly to 22.8% in 2019, 25.9% in 2020 and 27.0% in 2021.

Admission experts predicted that the repeater rate would approach 30% on the actual SAT. Seong-ho Lim, Executive Director of Sky Education at Jongno Academy, explained: “Considering High School 3’s trend of going all-in at any time and the recent trend of increasing the absenteeism rate, the repeater rate it will be around 30% when they take the exam. ” So there is a chance that repeaters will continue to be strong on this year’s SAT. Man-ki Lee, Director of Educational Assessment at Yu-Way, said: “Overall, graduates are strong in the top ranks, but as students are expected to weaken due to the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) this year, the influence of graduates on the SAT is expected to increase more than in previous years. ” However, it is a variable that the large academies have been closed for a long time due to Corona 19. The large academies with more than 300 people attended by the majority of graduates have only been taking distance classes since the 19th of last month. Even if large academies operate normally due to the publication of the second step of social distancing on the 27th of this month, it is predicted that some graduates will not return to restock general academies or restock boarding academies due to corona infection concerns19. As a result, experts say that how well graduates self-managed as enrolled students is a determining factor for the success or failure of this SAT.

The decline in applicants is expected to affect the candidate’s college admissions strategy. This is because the number of applicants for college and vocational colleges remained at around 555,000, while the number of applicants for the SAT dropped significantly. First, it increases the possibility of multiple acceptance of 6 positions that have received requests for occasional hiring and, consequently, the number of additional admissions is expected to increase. If there are many additional passes from time to time, the line of passes will inevitably decrease. As the number of students between the SAT levels declines, the number of those meeting the minimum SAT level is expected to decline. Recruiting on time can also reduce the passing line. This is because the number of students not meeting the minimum academic standards for the SAT is increasing, and if they cannot be recruited within the period, they will transfer on time. Even at the right time, several passes and the possibility of additional passes can increase.
