The number of employed women with children under 18 years of age decreased the most since the statistics were compiled. This is because the number of married women is declining and, in particular, there were many women employed in the industry who were affected by the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) this year.

According to the ‘Indicators of women’s employment by child characteristics’, a regional employment survey for the first half of 2020 published by the National Statistical Office on April 4, there were 2,672,000 employed women living with children under 18 years of age . 156,000 people decreased from last year.

This year was a year in which not only the women who were employed, but the entire labor market suffered. Specifically, last April, the reference point for this data, was the month in which the number of employed persons fell the most due to the first spread of Corona 19.

The face-to-face industry has shrunk due to the strengthening of social distancing, and the position of female workers in particular has shrunk. It was found that the majority of working mothers (working mothers) are engaged in commercial, personal and public service (1,432,000 people, 53.6%). In addition, there were also many employed in the wholesale and retail business and accommodation and catering (570,000 people, 21.3%).

Although Corona 19 encouraged the decline of working mothers, the number of working mothers was already declining each year. Compared to 2016 (2,914,000 people) when statistics on working mothers were first compiled, 242,000 working mothers disappeared.

The employment rate of working mothers was lower as children were younger and the number of children increased. The employment rate for women with children aged 13 to 17 was 65.3%, while the employment rate for women with children under 6 was only 47.5%. The employment rate dropped from 57.1% for one child to 51% for three or more.

The wages of working mothers were 31.5% of those who earned more than 2 million won and less than 3 million won, followed by more than 1 million won and less than 2 million won (30.9% ), and 3 million or more and less than 4 million won (14.9%). In the nation, Jeju Island (64.8%) showed the highest employment rate for working mothers. The employment rate was followed by Jeonnam (60.8%) and Daejeon (60.7%).

“As the tendency to postpone marriage increases, the tendency for working mothers continues to decline,” said Chung Dong-wook, head of the Employment Statistics Division of the Bureau of Statistics.
