The prosecution requested a year in prison for Choi Kang-wook, who was put on trial for issuing a false intern certificate to the son of former Justice Minister Cho Kook.
On the 23rd, at the hearing of Choi Jong-Geon’s exclusive judge, Jeong Jong-gun of the Seoul Central District Court, the prosecution asked the court to sentence Choi to one year in prison. The prosecution said: “It is a serious crime that violates the opportunity of other applicants to receive education in accordance with their ability to create a false specification by doing something that they did not actually do to enter a higher school.” “I don’t feel sorry for my mistakes,” he said.
The prosecution said: “The defendant is consistent only in evading his legal responsibility, ignoring the social side effects of his actions or the harm to other applicants,” he said. “As attorneys and public officials, they oppose the usual emphasis on justice and fairness. It is very likely that you will be charged,” he said.
Representative Choi directly refuted the prosecution’s claim. In his final statement, he criticized the prosecution, saying: “I’m just curious why the prosecution should have done it” and “it couldn’t be a political case, but it was a political case.” He said: “I am innocent and I think the judge will judge him that way,” he said. “For a long time, I regret making other people difficult and I pay tribute to the judge.”
The prosecution believes that in 2017, when Choi served as a lawyer at the Cheongmaek Law Firm, Cho’s son Jomo issued a false certificate stating that he had an internship at the law firm. The prosecution unequivocally charged Choi in January with interfering with the work of graduate school admissions officers who were requested by Cho. The first judgment sentence for CEO Choi will take place on January 28 of next year.
