LG mini LED TV’LG QNED ‘first launched … Samsung is about to launch too
Significant upgrade of existing LCD TVs … With the brand, the nervous war of both companies
In the new year, TV makers around the world, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, are competing fiercely with the launch of ‘mini light-emitting diode (LED) TVs’.
LG Electronics introduced a mini LED TV one step ahead of the 29 two weeks before the opening of the International Electronics Show (CES 2021), and the industry predicts that Samsung Electronics will also launch a mini LED TV during the CES period.
◇ Demand for Next Generation Displays Remains … LCD Premiumization with ‘Mini LED’
Mini-LED TV is a liquid crystal display (LCD) television in which 100-200 micrometers (㎛) of LEDs are inserted densely around a backlight that serves as a light source.
LCDs cannot emit light on their own, so they need a backlight to emit light. Mini LED TVs are a product that reduces the size of the LEDs entering the backlight and improves the contrast ratio, which is a disadvantage of existing LCD televisions.
The all-red televisions (OLEDs, organic light-emitting diodes), which LG Electronics is focusing on, and the micro-LED televisions recently launched by Samsung Electronics, are self-lighting.
Since the mini LED TV is based on LCD, it is technically at an earlier stage than self-luminous displays like OLED and micro LEDs, but contrast and color have been significantly improved than LCD TVs.
Both Samsung and LG are in the process of converting LCD televisions to next-generation displays in response to the aggressive low price of LCD from the Chinese manufacturer.
However, it is analyzed that the next generation screen is still limited in the demand of the general consumers due to its high price, which is why the suppliers chose the mini LED TV as the intermediate stage.
In fact, Samsung Electronics ‘recently launched micro LED TV has a 110-inch shipping price of 170 million won, and the price of LG Electronics’ all-red Type 88 8K TV is 50 million won.
In an online briefing to introduce a mini LED TV called ‘LG QNED’, LG Electronics said: “The new product is the pinnacle of the evolution of existing LCD TVs.” It will create a new market with more improved value than nanocells. “
LG Electronics explained that LG QNED has applied its own new technology ‘Quantum Nano Cell Color Technology’, which uses technologies based on nano cells and quantum dots at the same time, to improve the color expression of LCD TVs to the highest level.
More than 10,000 mini LEDs, which have a light source size less than one-tenth the size of a conventional LCD TV, are applied to the backlight and the contrast ratio has been improved, a disadvantage of LCD TVs. .
LG Electronics plans to launch 10 LG QNED TV models, including 8K and 4K resolutions, mainly in large products in the first half of next year.
The main products will be showcased at CES 2021, which opens on the 11th of next month.
LG Electronics did not reveal the specific price of QNED TV that day, but did reveal that it is less than half the price of 8K OLED TV, and is estimated to be around 20 million won for 88 inches.
◇ Samsung is also imminent to launch mini LED … QLED, OLED followed by ‘QNED’ name Shinejeon
In industry, Samsung Electronics also hopes to introduce a mini LED TV at CES2021.
Last month, Samsung applied for the ‘Samsung Quantum Mini LED’ trademark in Korea and Australia, and announced the launch of the TV.
Samsung Electronics’ existing LCD TV is a ‘QLED TV’ coated with quantum dot film on an LCD panel.
Mini LED TV will apply mini LED to the backlight of this QLED TV.
An industry insider said: “Global TV companies including Samsung and LG will jump into the mini LED TV right away and become the biggest battleground in the market next year.” It also means that it will take a long time. “
According to market research firm Trend Force, TV makers will launch mini LED TVs in earnest next year, and the total market size is expected to reach around 4.4 million units.
The industry predicts that Samsung Electronics will ship 2 million units, about half of which.
Nerve conduction is detected with Samsung Electronics around the ‘QNED’ brand that LG Electronics put on a mini LED TV.
LG Electronics explained that the name QNED is a mini LED TV that applies a new color expression technology that combines quantum dot and nanocell technologies.
It means that it was made by synthesizing the front letters Q and N from quantum dots and nanocells and LEDs.
However, the QNED name differs from Samsung Electronics’ QLED LCD TV by just one letter, and it is the same as the next-generation QNED screen developed by Samsung Display.
Samsung Display is developing QNED that uses a ‘Quantum Dot Nano Light Emitting Diode’ as a self-luminous device.
QNED is known as a next-generation display that makes up for the shortcomings of OLED or quantum dot displays that use nano-inorganic and organic materials.
LG Electronics filed for the ‘QNED’ trademark with the Korean Intellectual Property Office in September and applied for the same trademark right in the US, Europe and Australia.
On the 2nd of this month, LG Corp., a holding company, applied for the trademark ‘LG QNED’ to the European Intellectual Property Office, and on that day, the name of the mini LED TV was suddenly revealed as QNED.
Samsung Electronics also applied for a trademark titled ‘Samsung QNED’ in Korea in October.
The trademark rights applied by each company are currently under review.
Some analysts say the names of the two companies’ televisions are meant to contain each other.
This is not the first related workshop.
Previously, LG Electronics claimed that Samsung Electronics’ QLED TV is a similar name to OLED, leading to confusion among consumers.
LG Electronics reported Samsung Electronics to the Fair Trade Commission last year, stating that “Samsung QLED has a quantum dot in its LCD, and is different from OLED that emits light, but misleads consumers by using an OLED-like name. .
Consequently, Samsung Electronics also responded to LG Electronics, saying it slandered its QLED TVs without objective grounds, and ended the battle by dropping the reports side by side in June of this year.
In the second half of last year, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics fought an 8K TV picture quality battle that blatantly blamed each other.
The industry predicts that there is a possibility of a battle similar to the one above under the name ‘QNED’.
In this regard, Lee Jeong-seok, in charge of HE Marketing Communication at LG Electronics, said in a briefing: “We have constantly developed color technology combining nanocells and quantum dots, and registered the QNED trademark, which visualizes and clarifies the meaning”. “I don’t know in detail about the (QNED) technology,” he said.
Furthermore, LG Electronics claimed that its QNED TV is a product that has evolved a step beyond Samsung’s QLED TV through the number of LEDs or proprietary technology that combines quantum dots and nanocells.
