It was reported on the 26th (local time) that the accident of a local air force transport plane that occurred in the state of Kharkov, in northeastern Ukraine, was caused by aircraft failure or pilot error.
According to the TASS news agency, the Antonov (An) -26 military transport plane belonging to the local Air Force crashed and caught fire during an education and training flight near Pursuitev, a city in the northeastern Kharkov province, killing to 26 passengers.
During the accident, 27 people were on board, including cadets and flight attendants from the Kharkov National Air Force University.
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Andrei Taran said: “The interim investigation suggests that one of the sensors on the left engine has failed,” and said the transport plane was found to have fallen to the ground during the accident.
He said that only after the analysis of the black box data was completed could an accurate conclusion be drawn about the cause of the accident.
Kharkov State Governor Alexey Kucher, who visited the scene immediately after the accident, also revealed that “there is information that the pilot before the accident reported that the left engine had failed”, suggesting the possibility that the accident has been caused by a malfunction of the aircraft.
“For experienced pilots, this would not have been a catastrophic situation,” he said. “What happened later will be investigated through investigations,” he said.
The An-26, used for civil and military use, is a twin-turboprop transport aircraft developed and produced during the Soviet era.
Interfax News reported that a pilot landing at a nearby airfield appears to have mistaken the road for a runway, citing his own sources, and the possibility of pilot error is also being discussed.
The Ukrainian government created an accident investigation team headed by the deputy prime minister and launched an investigation into the cause.
In addition, local prosecutors said they have launched an investigation into the violation of flight regulations and flight preparation.
On the morning of the 26th, the search and rescue team recovered the bodies of three additional cadets who boarded the accident and ended the search, local media reported.
The rescue team had recovered 22 bodies from the scene immediately after the accident.
Two injured people were hospitalized, but one died later.
Consequently, of the 27 passengers, the number of deaths increased to 26.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed through its Facebook account that a cadet did not board at the last minute, and the total number of occupants was 27, not 28 previously known.
