Son Heung-min (28, Tottenham) won the FIFA Fuskas award for the ’70-meter Wonder Goal’ against Burnley last season. He is the first Korean player to win and the second in Asia.
Son Heung-min was selected as the winner of the Puskas Award at ‘The Best FIFA Football Awards 2020’ held online at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland on the 18th (Korean time). The Fuskas Award was established in 2009 after the late Ferenc Fuskas, a Hungarian soccer legend, and is awarded the highest score in a soccer game during the year, regardless of competition, gender or nationality.
Son Heung-min was honored with a fantastic goal in the English Premier League (EPL) game against Burnley last December. At that moment, Son Heung-min, who caught the ball from Tottenham’s field, ran for about 70 meters alone, surpassing six Burnley players, and burned the net with a right-footed shot in the penalty area.
This goal, which is considered one of the most wonderful in Son Heung-min’s footballing life, started with the EPL ‘Goal of December’, followed by ‘Goal of the Year’ by the British public broadcaster BBC, and the ‘Goal of the Year’ by the British sports outlet The Athletic. It was selected as ‘Goal of the Year’ for the 2019-20 season.
FIFA announced 11 candidates last month, and on the 12th, with Son Heung-min, Giorian de Alaskaetta (Flamengu) and Luis Suárez (Barcelona) were among the three finalists. The final winner was voted on by fans (50%) and a panel of soccer experts (50%).
According to the votes cast by FIFA, Son Heung-min obtained 13 points in the vote of the experts and 11 points in the vote of the fans, for a total of 24 points. Son Heung-min is the first Korean player to receive the Puskas award. As an Asian player, this is the second award after Mohammed Paiz Subri (Malaysia) in 2016.
