SK Hynix is expected to consolidate its position as the second leader in the global market for memory semiconductors (DRAM, NAND flash).

This is because if Intel takes over the entire enterprise NAND flash division (excluding Optane), NAND Flash may also rank second after DRAM (second place).

SK Hynix announced on the 20th that it had decided to take over the entire NAND flash business division, excluding Intel’s Optane division, through the Financial Monitoring Service Electronic Disclosure System (DART). The amount of the transfer is 10.34 trillion won and the reference date for the transfer is March 15, 2025.

On the market, the decision to take over is expected to serve as an opportunity to strengthen SK Hynix’s competitiveness in the solid state drives business, the demand for which has recently increased.

A securities industry official said: “The track record of SK Hynix’s acquisition of the Intel NAND Flash business division is interpreted as a willingness to dominate the enterprise solid state drive market, the demand for which is increasing rapidly. . SK Hynix is expected to deliver results through expanding its customer base (the effect of taking over the Intel NAND business) as it has. ”

He predicted: “In addition, across the NAND flash market, it is expected that SK Hynix can go beyond Micron to become the second largest company in the market with this acquisition.”

SK Hynix plans to transfer Intel’s production plant in Dalian in China and solid state drives business (including related intellectual property and labor) by establishing a subsidiary, as it is expected to complete regulatory approvals. governments by the end of next year for this acquisition. be be.

Additionally, by March 2025, Intel plans to transfer other NAND flash intellectual property, research and development, and labor to operate the production facilities.

In this regard, SK Hynix said: “It plans to take over the entire NAND business division, including Intel’s solid state business, NAND flash drive, wafer business and Dalian’s production plant in China.”

The company also added: “This is expected to contribute to strengthening the capabilities of solid state solutions, building a portfolio of high value-added products, ensuring a balance between the memory semiconductor business groups and strengthening the competitiveness of NAND flash. “.

The company explained: “From the end of next year until March 2025, the Intel subsidiary operates the Dalian production plant through a separate contract, and after that, the solid state drives division will receive wafers.”

An official from the semiconductor industry said: “SK hynix has prepared various preparations to ensure competitiveness in the solid state drive market, and technologies such as controllers, which were considered weak points, have ensured sufficient competitiveness to reach the level required by global companies “. SK Hynix is expected to advance the solid state drive market as well as the entire NAND market. “

Meanwhile, according to Trend Force, a market research firm, SK Hynix ranked fourth in the market with a 11.7% market share in the entire NAND flash market in the second quarter of this year. Intel’s market share is 11.5% (6th) and, through this acquisition, SK Hynix is expected to establish itself as 2nd place in the overall NAND flash market.
