Samsung Heavy Industries is generating last minute orders before the end of the year. Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it has signed a contract to supply ship blocks and equipment worth a total of 2.5 billion dollars (about 2.8 trillion won at the exchange rate of 1112.2 won) with European shipowners. The 2.8 trillion won ship order contract is the largest since Samsung Heavy Industries was founded.
Although Samsung Heavy Industries has stated that the ship’s owner is only a ‘European shipping company’, according to the industry, this order is an icebreaker liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be used in the ‘Arctic (ARCTIC) LNG-2’ project. , a large-scale LNG development project promoted by Russia. Observed as a carrier. Russia is moving forward with a large gas field project to produce LNG near Siberia’s Gidan Peninsula.
Russia tried to place a diversion order through the Zvezda shipyard in Vladivostok to improve its LNG tanker construction technology. The ship blocks are manufactured in Korea and finally assembled at the Zvezda shipyard. That is why the unit price of this contract is 250 million dollars, and the price of the ship is slightly lower than that of the LNG icebreaker, which is around 300 million dollars.
An industry official who requested anonymity said: “This is because the Russian government has the burden of placing orders for all carriers of LNG, the next generation technology, from foreign countries.” In September last year, Russia ordered 5 icebreaker LNG carriers in this way, and Samsung Heavy Industries signed a joint construction contract with Zvezda.
Earlier, on the 12th of last month, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced that “we have signed a contract to build 2,274 billion won for 6 LNG carriers with European shipping companies.” According to the industry, this contract is also a contract for the sale and supply of icebreaker LNG carriers to be used for the Russian Arctic project. The unit cost per ship was about 290 million dollars.
With this contract, the Korean shipbuilding industry has secured orders for all icebreaker LNG carriers to be used in the Russian Arctic project, and the order for the Russian Arctic project has been completed. However, Korea and Russia are expected to continue to cooperate on LNG. NH Investment & Securities researcher Choi Jin-myung said: “This contract is an event that confirms Korea’s LNG transportation technology once again.” Said.
Samsung Heavy Industries posted a cumulative order amount of $ 3.8 billion this year. It is still only 45% of the target amount ($ 8.5 billion), but this contract avoided the ‘cliff of order’.
