The research results show that ‘povidone iodine’, which is widely used in the home for wound disinfection, is effective in fighting the coronavirus. This study is a home in vitro (in vitro) cell experiment and should not be consumed directly.

After a recent study abroad that povidone iodine, called “red drug”, has antiviral function in patients with corona, the same experimental results were obtained in Korea.

Man-sung Park, a professor at the Research Institute of Viral Diseases at the Korea University School of Medicine, applied a drug containing 0.45% povidone iodine to a corona virus 19 culture test tube on day 7 to evaluate the antiviral effect, and the drug was found to reduce the corona virus by 99.99%.

Results of the study appear in the September issue of the Journal of Bacteriology and Virology.

Professor Park said: “Proactive management of mouth, nose and throat hygiene with povidone iodine will be of great help in managing Corona 19 infection.”

However, you should not dilute povidone iodine and put it in your mouth or apply it to your nose to treat COVID-19. Povidone-iodine medications released for the throat should be used for the respiratory system.

Recently, Dr. Samantha Frank of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in the United States announced that a povidone-iodine disinfectant solution inactivated the virus in 15 seconds.

This is a study that compares the case of spraying povidone solution on a plate grown with coronavirus and then spraying 70% alcohol. Povidone iodine solution exposed for 15 seconds at a concentration of 0.5% showed a better inhibitory effect of the coronavirus than 70% alcohol.

Povidone iodine has also been shown to be effective in influenza (flu) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in previous studies. Povidone iodine is expected to be used as an adjunct corona treatment if it is officially recognized as a corona antiviral because it is inexpensive and can be mass produced.
