Rapid Spread of Highly Pathogenic AI in Jeonnam … Occurrence Farms Number 4 in 10 Nationwide

The spread of avian influenza (AI) in Jeollanam-do is not serious.

A week after the first outbreak in Tokyo, not only the province’s meat duck farm, but also the bell duck farm and slaughterhouse are spreading out of control.

Quarantine authorities are struggling to block AI by killing 1.33 million ducks in Jeollanam-do alone.

In particular, infections are often asymptomatic and quarantine authorities are struggling to block the spread of AI because there is a high possibility that the farm may not even be aware of the infection before being examined.

According to Jeonnam province on the 13th, since the first suspected case was discovered at the fattening duck farm in Sijong-myeon, Yeongam-gun on the 5th of this month.

After the first suspected case was found, the diagnosis of highly pathogenic AI has not stopped as confirmation-inspection of nearby farms-additional discovery of suspected cases-confirmation-expansion of inspections in nearby farms has been repeated.

On day 9, four days after the first confirmation, a highly pathogenic diagnosis was also found in the meat duck farm as Naju city was aging, and the next day, a highly pathogenic AI occurred in the duck slaughterhouse in Naju .

The diagnosis of highly pathogenic AI in slaughterhouses was unprecedented in Jeollanam-do, and even quarantine authorities were puzzled, and on the 11th the next day, highly pathogenic AI was confirmed at the Jangseong duck farm.

On day 12, a day later, H5-type AI antigens were detected in two duck meat farms in Deokjin-myeon, Yeongam-gun, and a detailed examination is underway to determine whether it is highly pathogenic.

The concern of quarantine authorities is that four out of ten highly pathogenic AI-producing farms across the country are concentrated in Jeollanam-do.

AI Generating Farm

In the case of other provinces, a site or two were found in Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk, but in Jeonnam the highly pathogenic AI, which reappeared after three years, is spreading through the duck farm at a terrifying rate.

The scale of murders in the province due to the rapid spread was 812,000 on 40 farms for a month in 2017, but this year it has already exceeded one million.

In one week, 1.33 million were killed, including 144,000 ducks on three AI-prone farms in the province and one slaughterhouse, as well as 39 farms within a 3 km radius of the outbreak area, and 1,194,000.

In Tokyo, 267 farms were raising 4.92 million ducks, but a third of the ducks that were raised disappeared within a week.

The problem is that there is a high possibility that this expansion trend will continue for the moment.

Unlike previous cases, this highly pathogenic AI does not present symptoms or link between infected farms, which makes preventive response difficult.

In the past, there have been mortality from avian influenza infection, diarrhea and decreased spawning rates, but this year there are few signs of this.

Furthermore, the fact that it is difficult to find a link between the infected farms is also embarrassing for the quarantine authorities.

Stop AI

Previously, it was only necessary to block the link of infection between farms through epidemiological investigation, but this year, it is difficult to find such a link between outbreaks and epidemiological investigation that it does not make sense.

In particular, in the case of the Naju slaughterhouse, the test at the farm that shipped infected ducks was negative, but the cause of the positive test at the slaughterhouse has not yet been found.

Because of this, quarantine authorities are focusing on finding infected farms by conducting close inspections of all farms within a 10 km radius of the outbreak farm, but only finding infected farms late rather than blocking infection.

Jeollanam-do ordered a temporary halt to the movement of poultry and related workers and vehicles in the province until midnight to block the spread.

He also received instructions to strengthen responsible quarantine, such as disinfection of livestock-related facilities and vehicles, rapid inspection of epidemiological farms, expansion and installation of a checkpoint for duck farms, the appointment of an official dedicated to the poultry farm and farm facility inspection through affiliates.

A Jeollanam-do official said: “AI is spreading in a different way than in the past.”
