“As the final investigating officer, I bow my head to the accusation and apologize to Yoon Seong-yeo (54), who has suffered for a long period of 20 years.”
On the afternoon of the 19th, Lee Chun-jae’s eighth serial murder case was carried out in the 501st court, Suwon General Court, Gyeonggi-do. Two prosecutors who rose from their seats bowed their heads towards Yun. And, “(Yun) is not the true criminal of the eighth case, as long as it has been clearly confirmed, he asked the court to convict him of innocence.”
Prosecutors “Lee Chun-jae confesses, Mr. Yun, please convict him”
The eighth incident in Hwaseong was found dead on September 16, 1988 in a family home in Jinan-ri, Taean-eup, Hwaseong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. Yoon was convicted as a criminal at the time and served 20 years in prison and was later released on probation in 2009. Yun has been pleading innocence throughout. But the court refused. When Lee Chun-jae (57) confessed to the crime, Yun requested a new trial in November last year.
During the hearing of the Suwon District 12th Legal Criminal Division (Judge Park Jeong-je), the prosecution admitted that the previous investigation was wrong. The prosecution said that “as a result of the re-investigation, the confession of the accused was due to the assault or rude behavior of the police and did not correspond to the objective situation.” There was a decisive error in the results, “he pleaded not guilty.
Yoon “forgive the detectives who wrongly admitted the investigation”
Yun, who sat on the witness stand with the identity of the accused, explained in detail the process of her childhood when she was in need and the process of being investigated as a criminal in the past. He said: “I was forced to interfere with the police without knowing the content of the investigation, and I couldn’t even see the face of the public defender at the time.” When he was incarcerated, he had no youthful timbre, so he did laundry for others.
Yoon said, “(I was convicted as a criminal), but I also thought the times were the same. I accept it as fate,” he said. “(To the detectives who admitted the past investigation). They ask you to forgive them. I will forgive them.” He also said “thank you” to Lee Chun-jae, who came out as a witness and confessed to the crime. In the closing statement, he said, “I want to start a new life as a good person. I will always live with gratitude.”
Mr. Yoon’s retrial has been held 12 times from February to the present day, twice in preparation for the trial. 21 people, including Lee Chun-jae, were present as witnesses. Yun’s sentencing will take place on the 17th of next month.
