(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seung-eun Seol = President Moon Jae-in spoke with German Prime Minister Angela Merkel on day 1 and requested support for the head of the Trade Negotiations Headquarters of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, Myung-hee Myung-hee, who ran for the election of Secretary General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
It has been approximately two years since the summit meeting in Brussels, Belgium, on the occasion of the ASEM (Asia-Europe Summit) summit in October 2018.
The call lasted about 20 minutes on the proposal of President Moon to request support for the head of headquarters. Previously, President Moon sent a letter to Germany on the 24th of last month requesting support for General Manager Yoo.
In a call, President Moon told Prime Minister Merkel that “as I said in a letter at the end of September, I would like to ask for the interest and support of the general manager of Korea, Yoo, who is running for the secretary elections. General of the WTO.
President Moon explained, “Korea has grown up in a free trade order and has the firm conviction that the protection and development of a multilateral trading system should focus on the WTO.”
He stressed that “I believe Director Yoo has the vision and the ability to make these beliefs come true and is the best person to develop the WTO and restore trust.”
The Blue House reported that Prime Minister Merkel responded: “I see the Korean candidate Myung-hee Myeong-hee as the right person with skills and experience.”
Furthermore, President Moon said on the 3rd: “I sincerely congratulate Germany on its 30th anniversary of unification. It is a significant day that inspires many people who hope for peace and unification on the Korean peninsula.”
He said: “As the Corona 19 (new coronavirus infection) situation worsens again around the world, there will be great concern,” he said. “I pay tribute to the example of Germany in responding to Corona 19 under the leadership of Prime Minister (Merkel).”
He added: “We hope that humanity will play a leadership role in overcoming the crown crisis in the future.”
In response, Prime Minister Merkel said: “I have a significant impression on the 30th anniversary of German unification,” and said: “I know well the dream of Korean unification.”
He said: “I wanted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of German unification with great honor, but I regret not being able to do so because of Corona 19.”
Additionally, President Moon said, “I am happy to visit Chuseok, Korea’s best holiday,” and “I look forward to the opportunity to meet in person as Corona 19 (a new coronavirus infection) has subsided.”
Prime Minister Merkel replied: “I congratulate you on welcoming Chuseok, the best holiday in Korea” and “I wish you a good time and good health.”
