Subway Line 9 will run to Wangsuk New Town in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, the largest of the 3 new cities in the metropolitan area. It passes through Gangdong and Hanam in Seoul, and passes through Wangsuk 1 and 2 districts. In Goyang Changneung New Town, a new railway line (Goyang Line) will be installed leading to Saejeol Station in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, and line A of the metropolitan express train (GTX) of the metropolitan area will be built.
The Metropolitan Area Transit Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Daegwangwi) announced measures to improve the traffic of large areas in the new cities of Wangsuk and Changneung on the 29th. ◆ Extension of line 9 of Wangsuk New Town
Line 9 will run to Wangsuk New Town (66,000 homes), the largest among the third new cities. It is a project to extend the project of the fourth stage of Line 9, which ends at Gangil Station in Gangdong, to Hanam ~ Namyangju. The new town of Dasan aligns with the current district, Wangsuk district 2 and Wangsuk district 1. A total project cost of 1.5 trillion won is expected to be invested. An official from the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport explained: “The route and the location of the station are determined in the process of the monitoring procedure.” This announcement only presented an approximate direction of the project.

If Line 9 is extended to Wangsuk New Town, it is expected to significantly improve accessibility to Gangnam, which was considered a weakness. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport predicted that the travel time to Gangnam station, which previously took around 70 minutes, will be reduced to 45 minutes.
In addition, the history of Gyeongchun Line and Gyeongui Jungang Line will be recently established in Wangsuk 1 and 2 districts, respectively. In the case of the Gyeongchun Line Station, which was recently established in Wangsuk District 1, it will be transferred to the GTX-B Line. The Byeolnae Line, an extension of Line 8, runs from Byeolnae Station to the Byeolnae District and meets the Jinjun Line.
The overland road network will also be expanded. 32 billion won is reflected in the public transportation improvement project on the North Bank Highway to Gangbyeon Station in Seoul. The goal is to shorten the travel time between Wangsuk and Riverside by approximately 30 minutes by having a bus passage system that uses a central buffer zone. The Olympic Expressway will also be expanded and the Gangil Interchange (IC) bypass will be built. It also plans to promote the establishment of a new bridge over the Han River to diversify traffic demand along the Han River. A total of 2.3 trillion won will be invested in 18 projects, including the expansion of the subway.

◆ New route to Changneung / GTX
Changneung New Town (2.2 trillion won), the second largest of the third new cities, will invest 2.2 trillion won in 16 projects. Among them, 1.4 trillion won will be spent on the urban railway project from Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, to downtown Goyang. It is a line that connects Goyang City Hall with Saejeol Station, which is a transfer station for Subway Line 6 and West Line. Along with this, the establishment of Changneung Station on the GTX-A line is being promoted. It involves adding a station between the previously planned Daegok station and Yeonsinnae station.
On the ground, bus lanes will be installed to connect the BRT (arterial express bus system) and a project to improve the wide-area bus transport system will be promoted. The idea is to install a transfer facility at Hwajeon station and connect BRT and railways. In addition, the expansion of Seooreung-ro, a new connecting highway and the expansion of Gangbyeonbuk-ro were planned.
The plans for these projects, in which LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation) invests contributions for the improvement of metropolitan transportation, are confirmed through a preliminary feasibility study carried out by public institutions. Compared to the financial business that considers economic viability, the process is fast. In the case of the railway project, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to start construction in 2024 and complete it in 2028.
Measures to improve traffic in wide areas for Incheon Gyeyang New Town and Bucheon Daejang New Town are scheduled for deliberation on the 30th. In the case of Gyosan New Town in Hanam and Gwacheon District in Gwacheon, where Traffic measures were confirmed in May, it is planned to promote the licensing procedure for each project in the first half of next year. An official from the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport said: “We plan to implement the design as soon as possible, such as placing an order first.”
