When the demonstration was defeated, a demonstration was imposed to keep distance from the pickets
The National Federation of Democratic Trade Unions (Sindicatos Democrático) held a rally in the context of the spread of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) and confronted the police in various locations. In the process, the police detained a union member who was violent.
On the 4th, the police set up a checkpoint on the main road entering Yeouido, Seoul, the location of the KCTU meeting, and controlled the entrance, preventing a large number of personnel from gathering. In preparation for the assembly, the police deployed 181 units to the area around Yeouido and blocked the assembly with a wall of vehicles and a security fence. The KCTU reported an assembly of 1,030 people from 7 groups in the name of urging the passage of the Jeon Tae-il Law 3 on the same day, but was unable to hold a large-scale assembly due to police restraint.
The KCTU held a surprise rally when the planned assembly was destroyed. About 20 union members gathered around the tents set up in the vacant lot of Uisadang-daero in front of the National Assembly and then moved the street to the road near Yeouido Park. Later, they formed a line with pickets written about the ‘Law of Destruction of Justice and the Union’ and held a surprise demonstration. They said: “It is not a large-scale rally, it is just a picket act that complies with social distancing.”
Clashes broke out when the police broke up protesters trying to enter the National Assembly, which was the place where the protests were scheduled. A protester protested, saying, “Why don’t I let other citizens go?” At this time, a union member who assaulted the police officer after a dispute was arrested for obstructing the execution of public affairs at the scene. Police said members of the KCTU member who held a rally ignoring the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines that day, “we will apply charges as a violation of the Gypsy and Demonstration Act and the Infectious Disease Prevention Act and will deal with the law”.
Previously, the city of Seoul banned any KCTU meeting in Yeouido on this day in view of the increasing spread of Corona 19. Since the 24th of last month, gatherings of 10 or more people in Seoul have been banned. The KCTU announced that it would not hold a rally on Saturday the 5th.
