Jeju Hyup, the result of a public opinion poll, ‘opposite’ is slightly high
2 airport candidates, Seongsan-eup, have high approval
When applied by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Jeju Island, the reaction is likely to increase
Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju’s second airport.
As a result of a public opinion poll questioning the pros and cons of building the second airport, the biggest outstanding issue in Jeju, “the opposite” appeared predominantly. However, residents of Seongsan-eup, where the airport is expected to be built, were twice as likely to agree. If the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport and Jeju Island, which has been promoting the construction of the second airport, are forced to build, the reaction is expected to be strong. The 9 member companies belonging to the Jeju Island Journalists Association, etc., received the request from the Jeju Island and the Jeju Island Council and commissioned two public opinion polling agencies, including Gallup Korea and Mbrain Public, from the 15th to the 17th, announced on the 18th. The survey was conducted separately among 2,000 Jeju residents and 500 Seongsan-eup residents. In a poll of 2,000 citizens of Jeju Island, public opinion prevailed against the construction of the airport. In the Embrain Public poll, the opposition registered 51.1%, beating the public opinion of ‘Agree’ (43.8%) outside the margin of error (± 2.19%). In the Gallup Korea poll, 47% said “No” and 44.1% said “Agree”. However, in a survey of Seongsan-eup residents, which included the second airport, the responses in favor of the airport’s construction were doubled in both surveys. The answer in favor was 64.9% in the Gallup Korea poll and 65.6% in the Embrain public poll. The opposite answer was 31.4% for Gallup Korea and 33% for Embrain Public. This survey was based on an agreement between the Do and the Provincial Council in the second airport survey in December last year, and there was no discussion about the case where the survey result was within the margin of error, or whether the result of the survey of citizens of the province and Seongsan-eup were different. There is no coercion to follow the survey results. For this reason, it is also possible that the results of this survey lead to another conflict instead of ending the controversy over the construction of the second airport for six years. However, if the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Jeju Island enforced the construction of the second airport due to the high number of citizen opinion respondents, opposition groups and other opposition groups are likely to face strong opposition. Gallup Korea has male and female residents in 2019 aged 19 and over (sampling error ± 2.2% 95% confidence level), Seongsan-eup 504 residents (sampling error ± 4.4%, 95% confidence level) and Embrain Public has 2000 residents (sampling error ± 2.19%, confidence level 95%) and 500 residents of Seongsan-eup (sample error ± 4.38%, confidence level 95%) were surveyed respectively.
