In Nigeria, a militant Islamic extremist group Boko Haram raided a farm and killed at least 44 local residents.
According to the Associated Press, the attack took place on the 28th (local time) at a rice farm in the Kwashebe district of Garin, northern Nigeria, in Borno state. The Boko Haram militants who occupied the farm are believed to have rounded up the residents and killed them.
The incident killed at least 44 local farmers and fishermen and burned down the farm. Nigerian Congressman Ahmed Satomi told AP: “Farmers and fishermen were brutally killed. There were more than 60 farmers and, so far, only 44 bodies have been collected on the farm ”.
Nigerian authorities believe that some local residents have carried out a retaliatory massacre after refusing to hand over money to Boko Haram. Local officials told the AP that Boko Haram members have often forced local residents to hand over money, livestock and grain, and some residents have recently begun to resist.
The official told AP: “A Boko Haram member with a gun came to the village and harassed the farmers asking them to give them some money and food. While this member waited for the food, the farmers captured the moment when he entered the bathroom, took his weapon and tied him up. However, the army did not protect the farmers, and Boko Haram summoned members and attacked their farms in retaliation for defying Boko Haram. ”
It was also the day that Nigeria’s local council elections were held for the first time in 13 years. The Associated Press reported that many residents did not participate in the vote itself.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Bukhari said: “I condemn the killing of working farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is affected by such reckless slaughter. It is a sad moment. “I express my condolences to the grieving family.”
President Bukuri also added that he will spare no support for the military to defend the Nigerian people and territory.
