With the support of communication costs of 20,000 won, the rate of increase in consumer prices last month fell to a level close to 0%.

Support for telecommunications spending for some classes, which was supported by the fourth additional budget, reduced the overall rate of increase in consumer prices.

According to the trend in consumer prices published by the National Statistics Office on the 3rd, the consumer price index in October was 105.61 (2015 = 100), 0.1% more than last October.

The rate of increase in consumer prices is compared to the same month last year. In the first half of this year, it remained at the 1% level and then registered negative prices in May. Since then, it has risen again, showing a rate of increase of 1.0% in September, but fell again to 0%.

By category, raw materials rose 1.3%. Following the torrential downpour, a 13.3% increase in agricultural and marine products is a notable part.

The service fell 0.8%. This is the largest decrease since October 1999. The impact of the support for communication costs was large and the strengthening of government support for secondary school payments was also affected.

Mobile telephony rates fell 21.7%. This is the biggest decline since the related stats were created. However, since the 20,000 won support for communication costs is a one-time support, it is expected to have less of an impact from next month.

Ahn Hyeong-jun, Economic Trends Statistics Officer at the Bureau of Statistics, said, “The support of 20,000 won in communication spending contributed to the slowdown in the overall rate of consumer price inflation.”
