Corona 19 (a new coronavirus infection) is changing television consumption trends. As the life of ‘Zipcock (stay home)’ increases, the demand for ultra-large televisions with large screens is increasing rapidly.
The first million 80-inch televisions in history
According to UK market research firm Omdia the former, the ultra-large 80-inch or larger TV, which sold around 71 million units worldwide last year (based on shipping), is expected to exceed 1 million units (1.05 million units) this year for the first time. This is a 47.8% increase over the previous year.
In the television market, the demand for large screens gradually increased, but became more pronounced with the appearance of Pent up consumption due to Corona 19 in the third quarter of this year. Omdia predicted that this year’s ultra-large TV sales would be around 900,000 units through the second quarter. Raised the forecast by more than 10% in one quarter.
National television manufacturers lead this market. Samsung Electronics accounts for approximately 74% of the global market for ultra-large televisions 80 inches or larger.(58,200 0.00%)(53%) and LG Electronics(91,700 0.00%)(21%) explain it. In the first half of this year, about 120,000 units of QLED TVs of 80 inches or more from Samsung Electronics were sold, which are the world’s number one in terms of sales. This product sold only 10,000 units in the first half of 2018. It increased 12 times in two years.
An industry official said: “The demand for large and high definition displays is estimated to be increasing as time to spend video content at home increases due to the influence of Corona 19.” “The trend is to find a TV optimized for the same online video streaming service.”

As the screen grows, manufacturers are also eager to protect ultra-high definition content.
Samsung Electronics announced last month that it will start a project to create an 8K ‘Untact’ movie that records 8K video with the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 and enjoys video with an 8K QLED TV.
The movie ‘Untact’ is a romantic movie that reflects the social aspect of non-face to face, and director Kim Ji-woon wrote and directed it directly. Actors Goeun Kim and Jooheon Kim were cast in the lead roles.
8K means that around 8000 pixels are densely embedded across the width of the screen. Clarity is four times that of a 4K (ultra high definition) TV.
Previously, Samsung Electronics released a video of the space station produced by NASA to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing last year. In addition, the most prestigious soccer clubs in the world participating in the International Champions Cup 2019 (ICC 2019) were filmed with an 8K camera and released.
In March, in cooperation with the British sports broadcaster BT Sports, the Europa League match was filmed with an 8K camera and a real-time demonstration was conducted on Samsung QLED 8K TV.
The price of 8K ultra-high-definition televisions is also approaching popularity.
The range of options has been expanded from 3.49 million won (QT800, type 55) to 19.4 million won (QT950S, type 85) based on the factory price. The shipping price for the 2020 QLED 8K is 19.4 million won for the Type 85, 13.9 million won for the Type 75, and 9.2 million won for the 65 QT950S.
