Seoul, Chungbuk, Sejong, Gwangju, Daegu and Jeju have been designated as “autonomous vehicle pilot operation zones.” The service demonstration begins in earnest at the end of the year. The Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transportation plans to expand the designation of districts while reviewing related regulations based on this.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation held the ‘Autonomous Vehicle Demonstration District Committee’ on the 20th and announced on the 22nd that it has designated six autonomous vehicle pilot operation districts for the first time. The pilot operating district is a new system introduced by the Autonomous Vehicle Law, which took effect in May. It is a special regulatory district to support the demonstration of autonomous driving services.
Private companies can demonstrate from a business operation perspective while receiving actual rates after obtaining various special regulatory permits, such as allowing passenger and cargo transportation in the appropriate district, and exemption from vehicle safety regulations by allowing the temporary operation. The demonstration of transport and logistics services based on autonomous driving, such as unmanned shuttles, robot taxis and unmanned deliveries, is expected to become more active.
Regarding the scheduled service for demonstration by region, a shuttle service is operated between the DMC station and the commercial, residential and park areas in the 6.2㎢ area around Sangam-dong, Seoul. Chungbuk and Sejong plan to operate a Blue Express Bus (BRT) shuttle service, which runs about 22.4 km from Osong Station and Sejong Terminal, under autonomous driving. Separately, Sejong plans to pilot a demand-response type transportation service to the government’s Sejong Complex.
Self-driving road sweepers and waste collection vehicles are used in Gwangju. In Daegu, demand response taxi service and shuttle service are being demonstrated. In Jeju, a shuttle service to and from Jeju Airport and Jungmun Tourist Complex.
The Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport explained that the demonstration of various services in these pilot operating districts will begin at the end of the year. In the future, it plans to expand the district designation in conjunction with the pilot operation district management and performance evaluation. “The designation of this district has laid the foundation for the discovery and introduction of autonomous vehicle-based transportation and logistics services,” said Son Myung-soo, the second deputy minister of the Ministry of Lands, “We will actively support to advance the era of autonomous vehicle commercialization. ” Said.
