In the case of the EU, the purchase contracts were negotiated by the EU Commission on behalf of 27 member states. WP calculated the EU purchase price based on pricing information posted on its Twitter by the Belgian Budget Ministry.

The subsidy paid to the company during the development of the vaccine may have been a price difference between the two parties.

Regarding the price of a Pfizer vaccine in Europe 24.3% less than in the US, the WP said that “some of these differences may reflect that the EU subsidizes the development of this vaccine.” The EU and Germany donated $ 580 million to Bioentech, which jointly developed the vaccine with Pfizer.

The United States government provided $ 4.1 billion to Modena and $ 1.2 billion to AstraZeneca.

The difference in the order quantity may have resulted in the price difference.

Pfizer said that the 200 million doses (one dose) bought by Europe are twice as many as in the United States.

“We are using a pricing formula based on capacity and launch date,” Pfizer said. “We have reached an agreement with the EU Commission to supply 200 million doses and we have the option to request an additional 100 million doses, which is the largest initial order to date.” Said.

WP believes that there may be a price difference based on special contracts, such as provisions limiting the liability of pharmaceutical companies when side effects occur.

The Korean government currently has a purchase agreement with AstraZeneca and has signed a purchase agreement and a supply confirmation with three companies, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Modena.
