The controversy over the consideration of Jeonju Prison’s ‘mind and body healing room’
A national petition appeared to “close it immediately”
Clarification of the prison on “the purpose of preventing prison accidents”
The karaoke room installed by the Jeonju Prison in Jeonbuk to relieve the stress of inmates is controversial. In response to criticism for overconsideration, Jeonju Prison began to act as “a facility to prevent correctional accidents in prisoners.”
Jeonju Prison announced that it had opened the physical and mental healing room the day before to relieve stress and calm the mind. The healing room consisted of three karaoke rooms equipped with sound and lighting equipment, two game machines for catching moles, and a counseling room. It is reported that the physical and mental healing room was installed at a total cost of 50 million won with the support of the correctional council.
However, the critic continued: “Does karaoke make sense to go to jail after committing a crime?” (S37 ****). On the 29th, the Cheongwadae National Petition website also appeared in a petition calling for “immediate closure of the Jeonju Prison Mind and Body Healing Room.”
A petitioner who revealed that he is a 30-year-old office worker living in Seoul said: “A criminal is a person who has harmed others or violated the norms established by law.” It must be a place, ”he emphasized.
“Can those who have to protect the human rights of criminals say that the person who has harmed their children, siblings and relatives must also protect human rights?”
However, some opinions coincide with the purpose of opening the room for physical and mental healing. One netizen said: “The prison should not only punish and help correct people to live a new life,” he said. “In bad circumstances, self-reflection is difficult and of course there will be no expiation for the victims” (dir ****).
As the controversy grew, Jeonju Prison released explanatory materials on the 29th, explaining that it was equipped with karaoke equipment, not karaoke rooms, to prevent possible correctional accidents against inmates.
