As the amendment to the Military Service Law passed the plenary session of the National Assembly, it was possible for the BTS group to postpone entry until age 30.
In the Plenary of the National Assembly on the afternoon of day 1, a reform to the Military Service Law was decided, including those who stand out in the field of culture and popular arts, as subjects who can postpone recruitment or employment. military convocation.
According to the revised bill, the government is expected to prepare a Presidential Decree so that pop culture artists who have received a culture badge and a medal can defer enlistment until age 30 on the recommendation of the Minister of Culture. , Sports and Tourism.
The amendment to the military service law was published at the initiative of Democratic Party lawmaker Jeon Ki.
In September, the former legislator proposed a bill with such content, saying: “It is not reasonable not only from the point of view of depriving the opportunity, but also from the point of view of improving the national image,” if it is not allows deferral of military service by celebrities who have been promoted to status as BTS.
Under current military service law, an artist can receive special cases of military service if they win first or second place in a government-designated international competition or take first place in a national art competition such as Korean music. However, since special topics are limited to fine artists, popular music workers like BTS have been excluded. For this reason, it has been criticized that the exception of military service for artists does not fit the situation of the time.
After the first Billboard ‘Hot 100’ of the first Korean singer, the social consensus that the achievements made in the foreign music market of BTS, such as the nomination for the Grammy Awards, corresponded to a level of national prestige that was comparable to that of any international competition and, consequently, amendments were also made to the Military Service Law. It has received momentum.
According to the revised Military Service Law, the oldest member of the BTS members, Jin (real name Kim Seok-jin), is expected to be the first target to postpone military service. In October 2018, BTS received the Hwagwan Culture Medal in recognition of their contribution to spreading the Korean Wave and the Korean language. Jin, who was born in 1992, was allowed to postpone enlistment in the army until the end of next year in accordance with the current Military Service Law. It means that they can be active for two years.
Under the premise that activities are possible for the next two years, BTS is expected to be able to stand on stage with the current 7 members even when the time comes when the full tour resumes due to Corona 19. The so-called ‘Gun Baekki ‘has become a job after 30 for BTS.
Meanwhile, BTS simultaneously won first place on ‘Billboard 200’ with their new album ‘BE’ on the latest Billboard chart, and # 1 on ‘Hot 100’ with their new song ‘Life Goes On’. It is the first time in Billboard’s 62 years that a Korean song has been ranked # 1 on the ‘Hot 100’.
