Bahrain, an Islamic state in the Gulf region, announced the quarter (local time) that it has allowed Pfizer-Bioentech’s emergency use of the new vaccine against coronavirus infection (Corona 19), Reuters and Associated Press reported.

This makes Bahrain the second country to approve Pfizer vaccines after the UK.

Bahrain’s state news agency (BNA) also delivered the announcement that evening, explaining that it agreed with “a thorough analysis and review of all available data” regarding the authorities’ approval for the use of the vaccine.

Bahrain did not immediately reveal how much vaccine Pfizer had purchased.

Bahrain previously approved the emergency use of the Corona 19 vaccine from Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinoparm for medical personnel last month. About 6,000 people have already been vaccinated with the sinofam vaccine.

“The approval of the Pfizer-Bioentech vaccine will add an important additional layer to the Kingdom’s (Bahrain) national response to COVID-19,” said Dr. Mariam Al Zalahma, Executive Director of the Bahrain National Health Regulatory Authority.

The problem facing Bahrain is the cryogenic storage and delivery facility required by Pfizer vaccines at -70 degrees Celsius. Bahrain is a Middle Eastern country where summer temperatures rise to 40 degrees Celsius.

Bahrain owns the flagship Gulf Air, so it can be used to transport vaccines. In the neighboring United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai-based long-haul airline Emirates has already said it is preparing its own facility to distribute vaccines at cryogenic temperatures.

The Pfizer vaccine must also be given in two doses every three weeks.

On the 2nd, the British government approved the world’s first emergency use of the Pfizer-Bioentech vaccine.

The US pharmaceutical company Pfizer’s vaccine supply is expected to be further strengthened despite criticism that some, such as the European Union (EU), have noted that the urgent use of Pfizer’s vaccine in Bahrain was criticized, which was done two days after the UK use approval.

Bioentech, a German company that owns the vaccine, said it had so far signed a contract to supply 570 million batches worldwide in 2021. There is also an option contract to deliver 600 million times more.

Bioentech expects to supply at least 1.3 billion batches by 2021.

Bahrain is a small island kingdom where the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet is stationed as a key US alliance in the Gulf region.

The population is 1.6 million, and the Bahraini government said the cumulative confirmed Corona 19 cases were 87,000, including 341 deaths. There are more than 85,000 cured.

Many low-wage workers from Southeast Asia also live in Bahrain.

The Bahraini government has said it has conducted more than 2 million examinations across the island. Initially, the Bahraini government explained that it was due to the high rate of infection relative to the population and that they conducted many tests.
