The ‘third pandemic’ of a new coronavirus infection in Korea (Corona 19) rarely shows signs of abating.
As large and small group infections continued across the country, a large number of new confirmed cases spilled over the Christmas holidays (25-27 days). Even after the Corona 19 incident in Korea, it ranked first and second (1,241, 1,132).
Furthermore, the proportion of patients with “unknown route of infection”, who cannot know when and where they were infected, soared to 28%.
To stop this differential, the government decided to extend steps 2.5 and 2 of the ‘social distance between metropolitan and non-capital areas’ scheduled to end on January 28 to 3 of next year.
In the case of the metropolitan area, update observations were also made in three stages, but it was concluded that the current spread was suppressed by focusing on the distance of 2.5 stages and the ‘special quarantine measures for the end of the year and New Year’. If the expansion trend does not stop until January 3 of next year, it is expected to consider updating the third stage.
Key measures for special quarantine measures over the end of the year and New Years include banning gatherings of five or more restaurants across the country, stopping winter sports facilities and closing venues for sunrise.
◇ 999 confirmed cases of regional outbreaks on average per day for a week … As if it were less than 1000 today due to the holiday effect
According to the Central Defense Response Headquarters (Bang Dae-bon), the number of new confirmed cases at 0 o’clock the previous day was 970, and fell below 1,000 in four days after the last 24 days ( 985).
However, this is probably a “temporary phenomenon” due to the decrease in the number of inspections during the Christmas holidays. Due to the trend of the Corona 19 week, the size of confirmed cases may increase again from the middle of this week.
The number of new confirmed patients to be announced from 0 o’clock today is expected to be somewhat lower, similar to the flow of the last week. Typically, the effect of a decrease in the number of inspections on weekends and holidays continues through the beginning of the week.
In fact, 559 confirmed cases were counted midway between quarantine authorities and local governments, such as Seoul, from 0:00 to 6:00 pm the day before. There were 103 fewer than 662 people counted at the same time the day before.
During the last week (21-27 days), the number of new confirmed patients per day registered 926 → 867 → 1.90 → 985 → 1,241 → 1,132 → 970, with an average of 1.30 per day. . Of these, local outbreaks account for the majority with an average of 999 per day.
This spread of local infection is due to the invasion of Corona 19 in everyday spaces such as restaurants, pubs and family gatherings, and the recent outbreaks of group outbreaks in nursing hospitals, nursing facilities and churches, which are facilities vulnerable to infection .
Regarding the major new cases of infection, a total of 28 people, including residents and workers, were confirmed in a nursing facility in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, and 12 people, including teachers and graduates, were infected in a daycare located in Namdong-gu, Incheon.
In relation to the Gwangsan-gu Church in Gwangju, a total of 33 people tested positive, and the Asan Church, Chungnam and the Sangju Church, Gyeongsangbuk-do, had 8 and 9 confirmed members, respectively.
In addition, the infection scale of existing outbreak cases is increasing day by day, including the Dongbu Detention Center in Seoul (528 people accumulated), 3 hospitals in Goesan, Eumseong, Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk (214 people) and a nursing hospital in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi province (86 people).

◇ 28.5% unknown infection routes … 3 out of 10 do not know when or where they were infected
The rate of cases of unknown infection route does not fall below the 28% range. After showing the 27% range in the last 22-25 days (27.1% → 27.4% → 27.8% → 27.2%) for four consecutive days, it reached the highest level with 28.6 % on the 26th and maintained a similar level at 28.5% the day before.
This ratio remained in the range of 15-16% until the 6th of this month, but has continued to increase after exceeding 20% on the 8th (20.7%).
About 3 in 10 confirmed cases do not know the route of infection, which means that there is still a “silent spread” taking place somewhere.
◇ 2.5 extended steps instead of the third upgrade step in the metropolitan area … “Insufficient measures”, “Section 2.5 plus special quarantine measures for the end of the year and New Year holidays”
In the midst of this, the government held a meeting of the Disaster and Security Countermeasures Headquarters, chaired by Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun the day before, and decided to maintain the current level until January 3 next year.
The current 2.5 steps in the metropolitan area and the second stage in the non-metropolitan area were scheduled to end on this day, but it was decided to extend it by 6 days.
Kwon Deok-cheol, the first deputy head of the junior script, explained: “It is necessary to comprehensively judge and adjust all distancing measures while observing the trend of how the increase in patients will change according to the effect of the special measures of quarantine during the end of the year and the New Years period. “
He continued: “The current situation is somewhat stagnant, and there is no appearance of a decrease in the expansion trend,” he said. “I hope to see that if I try more, I could go into a reversal trend.”
Perspectives differ among infectious disease experts.
Choi Won-seok, professor of infectious medicine at Korea University Ansan Hospital, said, “I don’t think this quarantine measure (2.5-step extension) is enough.” “The current level of patient outbreaks is also not tolerable. Over time, we have not been able to reduce the incidence of patients in the future and in the future.” “If this number continues to accumulate, it will be difficult to manage (the home medical systems).”
On the other hand, Kim Moran, a professor at the National Cancer Center, said: “Not only by extending the 2.5 steps, but also adding special quarantine measures for the end of the year and the New Year holidays. Among them, the ban on gatherings (more than 5 people in the metropolitan area) is a stronger measure than the third step of distancing “. “If you don’t increase it further, you are successful. You have to manage it so that it does not increase and gradually reduce it.”
Faced with this situation, the quarantine authorities are tense as four family members who have recently entered the country have tested positive.
One of the family members in his 80s died of cardiac arrest and was confirmed first, followed by the remaining three as positive.
Quarantine authorities have now collected samples from them and started analyzing the entire genome. The results of the analysis are expected to be released within this week as soon as possible.
If it is identified as a mutant virus in the UK, it will be the first case in Korea. In particular, as mutant viruses are known to have stronger transmission power, the government’s response to quarantine may be even more difficult.
